The brave die never, though they sleep in dust: Their courage nerves a thousand living me.
— Minot J. Savage
For many families, Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer. The weekend celebration is often filled with quick getaways, barbecues, and lots of family togetherness. But the holiday is much more than this. It is a day of remembrance…to honor those who fought so intently to protect our freedoms…to reflect on what their loss signifies for us as individuals and as a nation.
I have several relatives who have served our country, some still with us today. For those returning back home to their families and their hometowns, the adjustment can be quite difficult. There are relationships that need to be reestablished, memories of war to make sense of (and in some instances, leave in the past), and the taxing role of finding a job. In an economy where unemployment rates are still quite high, our nation’s veterans are struggling to return to the workforce.
In honor of those who have lost their lives fighting for our country and those who are still here with us, Walmart has made a special commitment to hire 100,00 U.S. Military Veterans over the next 5 years, beginning Memorial Day.
I can think of no better group to lead in revitalizing our economy than those who have served in uniform – Bill Simon, President and CEO, Walmart U.S.
Despite the fact that veterans may face unique challenges when it comes to the workforce, their skill set is valuable, unique, and often highly specialized. According to Simon, Veterans have a record of performance under pressure, are quick learners and team players, and leaders with discipline, training, and a passion for service. As part of Walmart’s commitment to Veterans, the company will offer a job to any honorably discharged veteran within his/her first 12 months off active duty. I find Walmart’s commitment to and belief in the value of these men and women as employees, incredible. Most of the jobs offered will be in stores and clubs as well as distribution centers and the Home Office.
There is a seriousness and sense of purpose that the military instills and veterans bring leadership, courage, sacrifice, and commitment to every mission they take on, including their work (Simon). I can’t imagine a better way to honor these brave men and women, than welcoming them back, offering them the means to support themselves and their family, and give them renewed ambition.
