Did anyone see Jenny McCarthy on Oprah? It seems everywhere I turn somebody is talking about whether or not there is a link between autism and vaccines, in particular, the MMR vaccine. I KNOW that I have to give Josh his vaccines. I just don’t know if I am going to give them ALL to him. When I took him for his 2 month visit, I only allowed him to have the Polio and DTaP vaccines. My poor munchkin had a slight fever and slept for a whole day barely waking for feeds. I was so scared, but fortunately it only lasted for a day or so. Autism disproportionately affects boys more than girls so naturally I am hesitant. I received a TON of pressure from my pediatrician to give him the rest (HIB, Pneumococcal, Hepatitis B, and Rotavirus). I decided at the time to space them out but I never went back to give him the rest. I am terrified of everything I read, yet, as a nurse, I feel the need to be compliant. I don’t see why he needs to have the Hepatitis B vaccine, a virus that is transmitted via blood and body fluids. I received the vaccine prior to my entry into nursing school. Apart from working in a health care facility, having multiple sexual partners, or intravenous drug use, I really don’t see a justification for giving an infant this vaccine. I do know that the Hepatitis B vaccine is part of a combination vaccine which is why I feel the pediatrican was pushing for it. I never received the HIB or pneumococcal vaccines and I have mixed feelings after doing some research. I have yet to give those to him but I may decide at a later time to go ahead and give them when he will be around more children. The Rotavirus vaccine is a very new vaccine and I do not like what I have read about it. It was pulled from the market 1 year after being introduced when it was found to be linked with severe bowel obstruction. Apparently this is a virus that is more likely to be transmitted in day care facilities. When I explained to my pediatrician that I stay home with my baby, she didn’t really have much more to say to convince me that he needed the vaccine. I really feel like we give these tiny babies way too many vaccines all at once. I did not give half the vaccines that are recommended today. I have decided for now to split up the vaccines I give Josh, give them slowly (as opposed to the recommended schedule) and continue my research on the MMR vaccine. So, have you or will you give your child the MMR vaccine? If you have given your child the MMR vaccine, did you notice any side effects afterwards? I would love to hear some moms POV!
