Like many families, our schedules are busy and often unpredictable. I personally love the excitement of last minute trips or projects, but admittedly it takes my husband’s objective perspective to remind me when I we need a bit of downtime.  One of my New Year’s resolutions for 2014 was to be “in the moment” with my family…to spend quality, uninterrupted face time with my kids…to have date nights with my husband…to enjoy a cup of tea with my mom or a good friend. I was incredibly successful in the first few months of the year, but as we approach the busy Summer months, I find myself slipping back into the busyness of schedules with little breathing room. Like many of the women I come in contact with, I struggle with work-life balance.  I like to be busy, but I also really love those quiet moments with my family…those meaningful, in-depth conversations with a close friend. 1.  Schedule regular, one-on-one time with your spouse, your child, and a good friend: Admittedly, if I don’t put this time on the calendar, it gets neglected. I’ve made it a priority to schedule coffee with a friend, afternoon tea with my daughter, and date nights with my husband and I commit to keep that date without exception.

2.  When you’re feeling stressed, take a few minutes to pause, recollect your thoughts, and breathe:  It’s amazing how a few controlled, deep breaths can help calm my spirit and re-set my mind for what I’m about to encounter.  Whether it’s an interview with talent for an upcoming film or simply an over-scheduled day filled with my childrens’ activities, taking just a few minutes to pay attention to my breathing and posture can help relieve tension and anxiety.

3.  Schedule regular time to take care of you:  If I could give other moms one piece of advice, it would be to take care of you. I love the analogy of the speech we’re given every time we board an airplane.  You have to put on your own oxygen mask first, in order to be of any assistance to someone else who may be struggling. I know that when I’m feeling stressed and overwhelmed, I am not the best for my kids.  Whether it is an hour or two to have a meal by myself, or an evening bath after the kids are asleep, taking that time to take care of myself does wonders for my mood and gives me the energy I need to be the best mom I can be.

4. Don’t neglect the importance of regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and a healthy diet:  The physical and emotional effects of stress are well-documented and are only compounded by sleep deprivation, inactivity, and a lack of attention to diet.  By simply taking care of your body, you’re better apt to handle everyday stresses.

5. Make time to disconnect: This is a recommendation I am constantly striving towards. Our family has implemented a no-technology rule at the dinner table and I’ve worked hard to shut down before my husband and the kids get home so that I can spend quality time with them. The constant feeling of being “on” can contribute to stress, so strive to disconnect to make the most of every moment with your family.
