Even as a young girl, I had a passion for the arts. The very first Broadway musical I saw with my mother was Annie and I couldn’t wait to see more. From tapping to “Let It Snow” in my elementary school Christmas production to studying improv in my high school theater class, my passion for the arts has only grown over the years. I am thankful to my parents who exposed me to a wide variety of experiences and my goal is to do the same with my children.
This weekend, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts invites families to an afternoon of storytelling brought to life on stage as the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia presents A Brown Bear, a Caterpillar and a Moon: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle. Three of Carle’s books will be presented using “evocative music, stunning visual effects and innovative puppetry,” to unite families in a creative, interactive production. Along with classics like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me tells the story of a young girl’s unusual quest.
I am excited about taking the kids to see the production this weekend since I’ve heard fantastic things about the Mermaid Theatre. The company uses puppets, props, “black light,” projection techniques, and shadow puppetry to animate and bring these characters to life.
A Brown Bear, a Caterpillar and a Moon: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle will perform in the Samueli Theater this weekend, March 9th and 10th. The show runs for an hour which is perfect for small children and families are invited to arrive early for pre-show activities. Children can create their own puppets, read stories from Eric Carle, and even try their hand at shadow puppetry.
Tickets are just $20 and performances run Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. For more information visit the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
