What happens in a film is nothing short of magic. Regardless of the genre, a movie has a way of transporting an audience to another place and time…real or imagined.
This Friday, Relativity Media’s modern take on the classic fairytale Snow White, will debut in theaters nationwide. Despite the fact that Mirror Mirror is based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, the story is quite different, an appeal that will likely draw in a variety of audiences. As I sat watching the film, I became engrossed in the “magical realm” so vividly created by the filmmakers…the elaborate storybook sets…the imaginative, artistic costumes, each of which represents the character by which they’re worn…the intricate accessories, fit for royalty.
Had I not read up a bit on the film, I might have assumed that the Queen’s expansive quarters (for example) represented a historical site in Montreal, where the film was primarily shot. Interestingly enough, each of the fairytale locations are housed in and on massive sound stages that were built for the film. Director Tarsem Singh, who’s work includes Immortals, merged a variety of influences from Eastern architecture and Western culture to create the settings where the characters would live and be. Singh also drew inspiration from a Russian film titled Ivan’s Childhood and stated that his passion for visual detail stemmed from his desire to have the actors gain a better understanding of how they should be portrayed.

Complimenting the film’s fanciful sets are the awe-inspiring costumes, created by Oscar-winning designer Eiko Ishioka. Her costumes, which have often been described as works of art, draw inspiration from a variety of influences, combine “pageantry and personality,” and span across the 16th to the 19th centuries. As impressive as it is to learn that more than 300 costumes were worn in the film by the actors and extras, even more impressive is the fact that most of them were handmade. Rather than simply adorn the characters, the costumes in many ways compliment and help define each character. “The costumes really set the tone for the entire movie,” Arnie Hammer stated, who plays the character of Prince Alcott.
Here are just a few of my favorite costumes from the film:
