The Truth About Heart Disease *Giveaway*

Posted by Caryn Bailey 487 Comments

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is susitravl. Congrats!!

I used to think heart disease was something older (much older) men suffered from.  I’m a 30-something (ahem) year old woman who doesn’t eat red meat, limits conception of processed foods, and tries to make exercise routine.  But when I read statistics such as the fact that heart disease is the number 1 killer of women in the US or that women are eight times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer, I realize I must do more.

February is American Heart Month and to help raise awareness for the disease, Subway has partnered with Diet Coke to support The Heart Truth campaign.  The national campaign is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and equips women to take action against risk factors.  Subway and Diet Coke have donated $50,000 to support heart health programs nationwide.  Every time you visit a Subway restaurant, you can trigger a donation (up to a total of $100,000) from Diet Coke to heart health programs by using your smart phone to “check in” at the virtual heart flag nearby.  You can also visit The Hearth Truth to capture “heart flags” and plant them on your blog or Facebook page which will trigger donations and spread awareness for heart health.

So what can you do?  They say knowledge is power, so it’s important for women to know their risk factors (such as age, family history, smoking, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and physical inactivity) and their numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, and blood sugar).  Once you know your risk factors and your current state of health, you can begin to take action.  There are several important steps you can take to reduce your risk including weight loss, cutting sodium and fat from your diet, increasing your consumption of fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, fiber and whole grains, daily exercise, and being conscious of nutrition labels.

I grew up in a household that emphasized healthy eating, but for someone like my husband who didn’t, it’s been a journey.  I understand that lifestyle changes like diet can be challenging.  The Heart Truth is a great resource for getting started and on it you’ll find tips on heart healthy eating, lowering your blood pressure, increasing your physical activity and more.  To learn more, I encourage you to visit their website.

Win It! One of you will win an American Heart Month Package which includes a $50 Visa card for a one-month membership to a national gym chain, $25 Subway Card, pedometer, the new 2011 Diet Coke pin, as well as a Diet Coke Heart Truth notebook.  Simply leave me a comment with something you learned about heart disease from the website.  Comments will close on March 8th, 2011 at 11:59 PM PST.  US Residents only.  Duplicates and comments not including the above information will be disqualified. Comments are moderated. If you don’t see your comment in a reasonable amount of time, send me an email. Bloggers and non-bloggers may enter. If you don’t want to leave your email address, please be sure to check back for my announcement on the winner. Please note that winners must respond within 48 hours of being announced/contacted or another winner will be drawn.

I learned that women account for 61% of U.S. stroke deaths in 2004. Between 1995 and 2002, Puerto Rican Americans had consistently higher hypertension-related death rates. About 83% of people who die of coronary heart disease are age 65 or older.

    I learned:

The campaign is especially aimed at women ages 40 to 60, the age when a woman’s risk of heart disease starts to rise. But its messages are also important for younger women, since heart disease develops gradually and can start at a young age-even in the teenage years. Older women have an interest too—it’s never too late to take action to prevent and control the risk factors for heart disease. Even those who have heart disease can improve their heart health and quality of life.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of developing heart failure by two to three times. When pressure in the blood vessels is too high, the heart has to pump harder than normal to keep the blood circulating. This takes a toll on the heart, and over time the chambers get larger and weaker.

I learned that African American and Hispanic women, in particular, have higher rates of some risk factors for heart disease and are disproportionately affected by the disease compared to white women.

I learned Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

By doing just 4 things—eating right, being physically active, not smoking, and keeping a healthy weight—you can reduce your risk of heart disease by as much as 82 percent.
    Thanks for the contest.
