The Bodyguard at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts

I first saw The Bodyguard with my father as a teenager, and shortly after placed the soundtrack on repeat in my boombox (and I just revealed my age). The film, which starred Kevin Costner and the late Whitney Houston, tells the story of Secret Service agent-turned-bodyguard Frank Farmer, who is hired to protect music superstar Rachel Marron from a stalker. While serving as her bodyguard, the two unexpectedly fall in love. The Bodyguard was the second-highest grossing film the year it was released and boasts a score that became the best-selling soundtrack of all time.

Twenty years after the theatrical release of The Bodyguard, a musical adaptation debuted in London. Featuring the hit soundtrack as the score, the musical was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards and won Best New Musical at the WhatsOnStage Awards.

The musical advances the story to the present day and changes the focus of the story to the character of Rachel rather than the bodyguard as in the film. The story also expands the role of Rachel’s sister Nicki. In addition to the songs featured on the original soundtrack, the musical includes Houston’s So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love For You, I’m Your Baby Tonight, How Will I Know, Oh Yes, All the Man That I Need, All at Once and I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

The first US National Tour of The Bodyguard will play at Segerstrom Hall from May 30-June 11, 2017. Performances will run Tuesday – Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m.  and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m.  Deborah Cox stars as Rachel Marron and Judson Mills stars as Frank Farmer.
