Fall TV has been graced with a huge dose of nostalgia for three years now. I stepped onto the set of The Goldbergs and back in time, reminiscing about my very first New Kids on the Block concert, snagging my first Nintendo Entertainment System, and falling in love with Duckie from Pretty in Pink. The 80s were one of the best decades in American History, and as I walked through the Adam and Erica’s bedrooms, I found myself longing for a time when life was simpler, slower, and a bit more neon.
For anyone who’s ever worn leg warmers, watched a movie on their VCR, or traded a Garbage Pail Kids card comes a show that will take you back…way back when families connected over Reading Rainbow, E.T. and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Goldbergs hit fall TV 3 years ago on ABC, and garnered such support from audiences, that it was renewed for its 4th season earlier this Spring.
The Goldbergs was created by Adam Goldberg and based loosely on his childhood and family from the 80s. During his childhood, he recorded videos of events that took place and many of those are re-enacted on the show. Set in Pennsylvania, The Goldbergs stars Jeff Garlin as Murray and Wendi McLendon-Covey as Beverly, who are raising their 3 children in this decade. Adam (Sean Giambrone) documents his family life in a fashion that resembles Goldberg’s own video diaries.
In this week’s Halloween episode titled Stefan King, Adam’s love for Stephen King inspires him to take a “stab” at horror writing. When Beverly learns that the monster in Adam’s story is based off of her, she forces him to spend Halloween re-writing the story.
