The important thing in life is not victory but combat; it is not to have vanquished but to have fought well.
-Pierre de Coubertin
Two weeks ago, we were sitting together as a family on a Friday night watching the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. It’s amazing to me how quickly the time has passed. We cheered for Jordyn Wieber, Gabby Douglas and the other five girls who made up the Women’s gymnastics team and celebrated the end of Michael Phelps’ swimming career. There were so many memorable moments that will forever be engraved in Olympic history.
Leading up to the Olympic Games, I had an opportunity to speak with the moms of a few of the athletes, which was intriguing because I was able to get some perspective on what that journey is like. It’s hard to imagine that a child’s tumbling class or summer swim lessons could result in a gold medal, but for many athletes, their passion and skill developed very early on.
In just about a month, we’ll be engrossed in all-things school-related. But for now, we’re enjoying the late arrival of our scorching summer weather by cooling off in our pool! As much as my son loves the water, he’s still timid, which is why I really like SwimWays Swim Steps program and product line. Parents can visit TeachMeToSwim.com which offers parents a variety of resources related to swimming and water safety.
My son is currently in Step 2, Water Exploration. While he’s mostly still timid of the water, he does have periods of independence and with his Swim Vest, he can kick and paddle with myself or my husband and still remain completely afloat. The vest itself zips so that it’s easy to get on and off and I like the strap that goes in between a child’s legs for an added measure of water safety.
