St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Food Gift + Free Printable

With St. Patrick’s Day less than a month away, I thought I would teach my children about the holiday through an engaging, edible craft, since most of what my son knows was learned at school.  Despite my husband’s Irish roots and our year spent in the UK (including Ireland), I personally didn’t know a lot about this religious holiday, celebrated here in the US on March 17th. Named after Saint Patrick, this holiday commemorates his prominent role in bringing Christianity to Ireland. Traditional Irish celebrations include parades, festivals, and the wearing of the green.

So where in the world does the Leprechaun fit into this holiday with deep, religious roots?

According to The History Channel, the origin of the Leprechaun stems from the Celtic belief in fairies. Folklore is common amongst the Irish and the believe was that Leprechauns store their gold coins in a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If captured by a human, they have the power to grant three wishes in exchange for their release. This information coincides with what my son has learned in school.  Last year, their class built a Leprechaun trap to see if they could garner chocolate gold coins!

St. Patrick's Day Leprechaun Food

My son really enjoyed the Leprechaun-catching activity last year and asked if we could build our own Leprechaun trap at home this year. Since my trap-building skills could use some work, I suggested we lure the famed Leprechaun with some food.  That became a hilarious Google search filled with hilarious gags and zany poems since no one has ever really been successful at catching the illusive Leprechaun.

If you’re looking for a fun way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your kids, here is an easy tutorial for Leprechaun Food!

Here is what you’ll need for this edible gift (available at your local Walmart):

Ingredients For Leprechaun Food

  • 4 ounce Mason Jars
  • Berwick Offray Ribbon Sheer Elegance Kiwi Ribbon
  • St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Food Printable Gift Tags
  • 6 cups Kellogg’s Crispix
  • 4 ounce Semi-Sweet Baking Chocolate Bar
  • 1/2 cup green mini M&Ms
  • 1/2 cup crushed Pistachios

Making Leprechaun Food

1.  To prevent your Leprechaun Food from sticking, coat a 13x9x2 inch pan with cooking spray

2.  Spread cereal into pan

3.  Melt chocolate bar and drizzle across cereal (be sure M&Ms and pistachios are ready)

4.  Sprinkle M&Ms and crushed pistachios over chocolate/cereal mixture while chocolate is still melted

5.  Allow to cool

6.  Break off pieces of cereal mixture to fill mason jars

7.  Punch a hole through each printable gift tag

8.  Thread gift tag through ribbon and tie around the mount of the jar

My kids had so much fun working on this edible craft/gift!  Not only was it easy and quick, we had an awesome healthy-ish snack! Give these as gifts, bring them to your next St. Patrick’s Day Party or simply enjoy as a delicious treat!
