Fresh, funny, and surprisingly poignant, The LEGO Batman movie follows the story of Gotham City’s crime-fighting superhero. While there have been countless iterations of the lone vigilante, this particular story explores the solitude that comes from being a superhero, particularly one who lost his parents at a young age.
The LEGO Batman Movie follows the story of the famed superhero as he navigates the new changes inducted by newly appointed Commissioner Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson). With plans to restructure Gotham Police to keep the city safe without Batman, the lone vigilante questions his relevance. Batman is forced to confront the life of self-imposed isolation he created in response to the death of his parents. If Batman wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, he’ll have to learn that he can’t do it alone.
Rosario Dawson Adds her Considerable Talent to the Film
In the film, Rosario Dawson voices Barbara Gordon, who becomes the infamous Batgirl. Earlier this week, Dawson shared her history with Batman, why her character is so inspirational and the important lessons audiences can learn from her. The LEGO Batman Movie is an origin story, and yet it differs in the sense that tragedy is what brings many of the characters to their current plight. The Joker’s insanity and push towards violence is in direct opposition to Batman’s resolve to prevent the pain he experienced when he lost his parents. Barbara is the ideal character to tackle crime by marrying Batman’s vigilante approach with that of the regular police force.
Rosario Dawson is no stranger to animation, and you may remember her role as Artemis in Wonder Woman. Her uncle was a comic book artist and she recalls growing up with Batman. “I grew up with these major characters that I loved so much.” Specifically, she found that there was something “powerful and also scary about these characters and dynamics.”
Dawson’s character Barbara had a remarkable relationship with Batman and the two worlds, bringing together the rampant crime and this “insane world where magic and heroes” exist. Gordon was inspired both by Batman and her father but “she’s not trying to be Batman” nor is she trying to be her father. “She’s trying to be the best version of herself.” She wants to emulate these incredible men in her life, and yet you see these same men “being moved and challenged and pushed by that same woman who takes what they taught her and adds something even more to it.”
One of the things I personally loved about the film was its relatability, specifically when it comes to boys and girls. Some may consider Batman and this world of superheroes to have a higher affinity for boys. And yet, Barbara stands out as a prominent character in the film, inspiring girls with her confidence. “She knows what she wants, she knows what she’s capable of, and she’s willing to do what it takes to get what she wants.” Her confidence stems from her hard work and it is intrinsic, irrespective of what is going on around her.
