Rockin’…Disney Style!

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent”

~Victor Hugo

I remember the day I met my husband.  We were standing next to each other in church.  All I could think about was how lovely his voice sounded.  And I knew in that moment that I wanted a husband who appreciated music as much I do.

Without question I knew that my son would grow up in a house filled with music…even if at times it’s just mommy’s voice in the shower!   I love playing music for my son when we’re in the car because he still doesn’t like his car seat.  I turn it up and sing and he starts giggling!  Or I’ll play something mellow when he’s getting sleepy and he knocks out in the car.  When we’re at home and I have to get some laundry or dishes done I put some upbeat music on for him while he plays to avoid the terrible tube.  Good thing because research shows that music benefits children in numerous ways.  Singing, dancing, and listening to music engages a variety of senses.  Children who are actively involved in music (whether it be singing, dancing, or playing an instrument) do better in reading and math when they start school, are better able to focus and control their bodies, play better with others, and have higher self-esteem (KidsHealth).

Disney Records has released several great new CDS to kick off their Music Block Party Tour.  The festival will incorporate live musical performances by They Might Be Giants, Imagination Movers, Dan Zanes, Ralphs World, and Choo Choo Soul.  The entire family will have an opportunity to sing and dance with the artists and explore the festival grounds and activity zones.  I encourage you to visit their site to find out when the party will rock your city.

Thanks to Mom Central we were able to review the following CDs by Disney Records.

Disney Music Block Party is a compilation of well-known Disney classics performed in true uptempo fashion.  Kids will love Mickey and Goofy’s “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” and what child doesn’t know who The Wiggles are?  Hearing the Tiki Tiki Room brought back many mouse-like memories.

Choo-Choo Soul is a CD/DVD combo that takes children on a musical adventure with Genevieve and DC from Playhouse Disney. Urban, bluesy tunes teach children about letters and numbers.  Be warned…you will be tapping your foot, humming and drumming once you’ve listened to this one a few times.

They Might Be Giants is another CD/DVD combo comprised of original songs and music videos that put the fun in learning numbers (each song’s focus is on a different number).  Bonus:  The videos are hosted by the John and John puppets.

The Imagination Movers sing about messy rooms, healthy snacks, sibling rivalry and other topics that relate to being a little kid in their CD entitled Juice Box Heros.  Who knew that kids would be inspired to say please and thank you and clean up their room simply by listening to a song?  Note to Disney…Does it work on husbands?

Ralph’s World’s latest rhyming CD is out, The Rhyming Circus.  His play on words is ingenious, although not my favorite. Who knew that creatively paring seemingly unrelated concepts would get him nominated for a Grammy?

Disney’s new CDs are entertaining and educational.  Be sure to check them all out here.  They’ll definitely be played for years to come.

Why not throw you own Block Party?

I have some Disney Music Block Party activity booklets and They Might Be Giants stickers up for grabs.  If interested, leave me a comment or send me an email.
