Resources For Hunger Relief

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

We wake up in the morning, shower and get dressed, go downstairs to eat breakfast and begin our day’s activities.  It’s so routine…so basic…for most of us anyway.

There is a need…a nationwide need for children to receive the nutrition they need to grow and thrive.  17.2 million children in the US don’t know where their next meal is going to come from. I can’t even get my mind around a number like this.

While it may be obvious, a child who lacks adequate nutrition may suffer adverse physical, emotional, behavioral, and developmental effects. The result is a child who may fall behind academically… consequences that could effect everything from college acceptance to future employment.

Where is the relief?

Feeding America is the nation’s leading hunger-relief charity. Through a nationwide network of food banks, the organization is working to alleviate hunger in the US.  Each year, Feeding America serves 14 million children, with almost a fifth of those children aged 5 and under.

How is Feeding America making a difference?

The organization, which seeks to address hunger across the life span, has two national programs in place which focus on children.  The Backpack Program was designed to meet the needs of children during times such as weekends or school breaks, when other resources are not available. Backpacks are filled with non-perishable food and delivered discreetly to children before the weekend.

Kids Cafe provides free meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of community locations such as churches, schools, etc.  In addition to providing meals, all Kids Cafe programs offer a safe place for children to get involved with educational, recreational, and social activities under the supervision of staff.

How can you make a difference?

The easiest way to help in the fight against hunger is to do something you already do.  ConAgra has partnered with Feeding America to donate up to 2.5 million meals through May 2011.  Whenever you purchase select ConAgra Foods brands, be sure to enter the code found on the package on the Child Hunger Ends Here website.  Participating brands include: Banquet, Chef Boyardee, Healthy Choice, Fresh Mixers, Kid Cuisine, Marie Callender’s and Peter Pan. Please note that codes on specially marked packages can be redeemed through August 2011.

You can also donate your time…or your money.  Volunteering can be as easy as transporting food to charitable agencies or repackaging donated food for use at food pantries. You can also serve in a more personal role by tutoring kids at your local Kids Cafe.  If you’re interested in making a financial contribution, you can text “FEEDKIDS” to 50555 to make a $10 donation directly to Feeding America (through June 30th).

This is part of a compensated campaign through ConAgra Foods and Feeding America.
