I had the opportunity of finally trying the mom-invented ReliaDose recently after Josh had a reaction to his immunizations. My poor little munchkin was so miserable the last couple of days and I am so glad I had this product. I quickly learned that 4 month olds are smarter than you think. They know that Tylenol drops do not taste like breast milk. My little one would wait until I was sure he had swallowed to spit out the medicine that was supposed to help his fever. So by the time I realized he had spit it out, there was no way for me to know how much he actually swallowed. ReliaDose to the rescue! Being the nurse that I am, I want accuracy and ReliaDose provides that. A syringe is attached to the inside of a bottle and when the child drinks his/her milk/formula, he/she takes the medicine as well. I really like the product but there are some concerns I have with it. I can’t seem to get him to take the full dose of medication because some of it remains in the syringe. Being that he is 4 months, doses are small and every ml (or drop for the layman) is important. I have to squirt the rest of it into his mouth but I feel comfortable knowing that he at least received most of the medication. Obviously an exclusively breastfed baby probably wouldn’t take his/her medication this way. The nipple on the bottle is very different than the nipple Josh uses so it takes him a few sucks to actually get the medication. Some babies might be more particular about the type of nipple/bottle they take. My only other concern (which I have experienced working in the NICU) is that some babies who don’t like the taste of medicine may develop an aversion to eating (or shall I say drinking their milk/formula). Fortunately Josh loves to eat so that is not a problem. Any parent who is struggling with giving their child medication will benefit from this product.
