Tech for Kids: PlayMG Portable Android Gaming System *Giveaway*

Posted by Caryn Bailey 69 Comments

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is Claudia. Congrats!

No compensation was received for this post.  Items for review and giveaway were supplied which helped facilitate the writing of this post.

When my husband and I first bought smartphones, we decided that we were going to be vigilant about not letting our children play with them.  Most of this was logistical since the screen on my first smartphone cracked to the point that it was irreplaceable. As you can imagine, that didn’t last long.  I didn’t even know what a smartphone was as a child, but our children are growing up in a digital world and we prefer not to shield them from technology.

Admittedly, I allow my children to play carefully selected games with my supervision.  We set time limits and I ensure that the content my children are exposed to is age-appropriate and wholesome (and in many instances educational).  The challenge comes with deciding whether or not they are old enough for a tablet since it will be many years before they have a smartphone.

PlayMG Device

Enter PlayMG, the first Portable Android Gaming System that looks like a smartphone and has nearly all of the capabilities of a smartphone, without any monthly fees (since it isn’t technically a smartphone).  This innovative, sleek portable entertainment system is WiFi-enabled which means, as long as you have a connection, you can stream music and movies, play games, read e-books, download apps, and more. It even has a built-in front-facing camera! This video tells you everything you need to know about PlayMG:

For families like ours, that enjoy technology but aren’t ready for our kids to have smartphones, PlayMG offers a safe, affordable, versatile system for on-the-go entertainment.  Here are my favorite features of this brand new system:

It looks like a smartphone:  At my childrens’ ages, this is more of a cool factor.  But when it comes to tweens and teens, they want a device that looks “cool.” The sleek, slim design of the PlayMG looks like a smartphone and offers nearly all of the functionality (minus the ability to make calls).

There are no monthly fees: Our cell phone bill is high enough without having to factor in the added expense of another service or unexpected download charges (aka in-app purchases).  The PlayMG comes pre-loaded with premium games plus you’ll have access to a number of free games and apps on Google Play.

Parents can monitor their children’s usage and purchases: Perhaps the most frightening aspect of allowing my children access to the internet is the potential for them to be exposed to inappropriate content.  With PlayMG’s Family Collaboration System (a downloadable app), I can teach my children responsible internet usage while monitoring their activity including downloads, games they are playing, and how much time they are on the device. I can also control how much they are spending on app purchases through the BilMyParents SpendSmart Prepaid Mastercard.

Setting the device up was easy and took just a few minutes.  All I had to do was sign into my Google account, set up the WiFi,

The device itself contains 2 GB of usable internal memory plus the ability to expand that memory with microSD cards.

PlayMG Bundle

PlayMG is available at Target, Amazon, and Toys R Us individually as a unit or bundled with a microSD card, charger, and protective case.

Win It! One of you will win a PlayMG!  Simply complete the Rafflecopter form and leave me a comment with one feature you like about the PlayMG.  Comments will close on December 31st, 2013 at 11:59 PM PST.
