Over the weekend, I was talking to my mom about my daughter, and how she is becoming quite the “girly-girl.” It’s interesting how most little girls have that innate desire to wear pretty dresses and apply makeup. I’m pretty certain that one component of my daughter’s femininity is the fact that she sees mommy doing these things, and therefore wants to imitate me. While I definitely don’t mind her dressing up like her favorite princesses, she isn’t old enough to wear makeup or other things I feel should be reserved for girls much older than she is.
But what about nail polish? I often hear moms talk about getting mini manicures and pedicures with their daughters. I absolutely love the occasional pampering, but conventional nail polish contains ingredients that are questionably toxic. In fact, if you want to know what is in most polishes, you can visit How Stuff Works for a detailed list. Since little hands eventually end up in their little mouths, I would never use conventional polish on my daughter.
Introducing Piggy Paint, a natural, eco-friendly nail polish designed by a mom concerned with the chemicals in conventional polish (even those specifically designed for children). Available in a wide variety of vibrant colors, Piggy Paint is derived from a water-based formula that is free from formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, biphenyl A, ethyl acetate and acetone.
When my daughter and I opened the package, she was giddy about having her nails painted. She has seen my painted nails and toes often enough to know exactly what we were about to do. We laid out all of the colors and she decided that she wanted each hand/foot painted a different color. She chose Girls Rule! and Forever Fancy for her toes and Dragon Tears and Tea Party for Two for her fingers. We both liked these four colors because they have a metallic finish to them.
While I painted her nails, she giggled the entire time. It was a joyous mother-daughter bonding experience.
To ensure that the color was rich enough, we applied two coats, then set the polish with a blow dryer on low for about 1 minute (Piggy Paint recommends singing the ABCs twice during drying). While I found that the polish dried relatively quickly, I think I would like to purchase Piggy Paint’s Topcoat since my daughter already discovered how to “peel” away at the polish.
As far as the polish itself, I found it to be easy to work with, dried quickly, and resulted in a rich, vibrant finish. The brushes are small enough for even the littlest of toes and fingers, but I do recommend purchasing a pair of toe separators (Piggy Paint offers an affordable 4-piece Pedi Set that includes these) so that polish does not end up on your child’s toes.
As a mom, I appreciate the fact that these polishes are safe, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic. And, there are several colors I would consider wearing!
You can check out Piggy Paint’s entire line of eco-friendly nail polish on their website or at Walmart. In addition to the polishes, Piggy Paint offers gift sets, accessories, and a low odor, acetone free nail polish remover I’m going to purchase so I don’t have to use a toxic version for my daughter (or myself).
