Sometimes, in the early hours of the morning when the sun is just peaking out over the horizon, I sit and watch you sleep, reflecting on the person you’ve become and dreaming about your future. You constantly amaze me with your skills and knowledge, and I have to pinch myself every time I think about the fact that five years ago, you were but a sweet, teeny-tiny baby in my arms.
While there are a ton of books, classes, and experts all trying to tell me how to help you become the best person you can be, you, like so many other kids, do not fit any particular mold. So rather than try to follow a list of do’s and don’ts, I simply want to ensure that I’m being the best mother I can be to you to help you realize your potential…your dreams.
First and foremost…I want you to know that you matter…that you’re important to me.
I want you to have purpose…to know your worth…and to respect and embrace that worth.
I want you to have a passion for people…to love and to give and to serve.
I want you to be confident and courageous, yet mindful and discerning.
I want you to embrace all the beauty this world has to offer…art…culture…food.
I want you to love learning and knowledge and pursue sports…develop interests.
Above all I want you to dream and I want to help you on your journey to pursuing those dreams.
A few months ago, I was reflecting on the fact that my son will soon start kindergarten. During that time of reflection, I inevitably began questioning myself…wondering if I’ve done enough…hoping I’ve been the best mom I can be to him so that he has the foundation for success in all areas of life.
To say that motherhood is challenging is really an understatement. Raising a child, and all that entails, is one of the most important things I’ll ever do in my life.
As you’re well aware, it’s Olympic season, and the culmination of all of this excitement will happen tonight during the opening ceremonies. An incredible amount of attention is focused on the amazing and talented athletes representing countries around the world, and rightly so. But behind every athlete is a mom who’s helped her child succeed and make it to the Olympics. And that is why I appreciate P&G’s Thank You Mom Campaign, which honors mothers and all they do to help their children succeed.
Last week, I had an opportunity to speak with Ondina Lopez, mom to Olympic hopefuls Steven and Diana Lopez. All four of her children are at the world elite level in Taekwondo, which is impressive. A mother’s support can make all the difference and I found her to be incredibly inspirational as she talked about her and her children’s journey to the Olympic Games.
This year, Steven López will compete in the 80kg division at the 2012 London Olympic Games. He has partnered with Crest & Oral-B Complete to share how a healthy oral care routine and a winning smile can help fuel confidence. Crest & Oral-B have also partnered with Ondina López to showcase the importance of a mom’s support when it comes to athletic success.
