Neosporin…A First Aid Kit Staple

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago my son scraped his head while he was looking for ants in the front yard. Today he tried to climb on a chair and tumbled a very short distance to the floor.  Welcome to mothering a boy.  Cuts, scrapes, bruises and bumps seem to be inevitable.  The nurse in me always seems to overreact to my son’s mishaps, and it’s really difficult to “let go” of the fact that this is part of toddlerhood and being a boy.

I keep a running supply of illness and first aid basics in our cabinet and in my car.  One of the staples is Neosporin.  I remember my mom using it on my cuts and scrapes as a child.  I use Neosporin on any type of cut, scrape or other break in the skin. This triple antibiotic was designed to “kill off common skin bacteria, speed the healing process, and minimize the appearance of scars.”  I find it works really well on paper cuts for myself because those little cuts HURT!  There are three different Neosporin products available for cuts and scrapes:  Their conventional Neosporin + First Aid Antibiotic Ointment, Neosporin Pain Relief Ointment & Cream, and Neosporin Neo To Go (which I had never heard of).  You’re most likely familiar with the first but you may want to consider Neo To Go, particularly if you have children.  Neo To Go is a spray that offers no touch, no sting application for protection against infection.  Application is so easy and definitely not as messy as the ointment.  Neosporin Pain Relief Ointment & Cream is particularly beneficial for burns and painful cuts.  Neosporin products are available at retailers nationwide.

A little goes a very long way which means the tubes seem to last forever. Did you know that 40% of homes have an expired tube of Neosporin or other topical antibiotic in their home?  I knew that since I am a nurse and regularly check expiration dates on all of our medications.  Be sure to check expiration dates since topical antibiotics like Neosporin lose their effectiveness once expired.  For safety tips, head on over to their site.

Profuse thanks to Mom Central for this review opportunity.
