National Costume Swap Day

Posted by Caryn Bailey 1 Comment

Every year, we get our son (and this year our daughter) a Halloween costume.  My husband and I enjoy celebrating holidays with our children and strive to create meaningful memories with them.  But I can’t help looking at holidays and the stuff we buy through my eco-glasses.

I stumbled upon National Costume Swap Day and felt compelled to share the details of the day with you.  Regardless of the age of your child, inevitably he or she will either outgrown the previous year’s costume or refuse to wear the same costume two years in a row. And who really wants a repeat of the year before in pictures anyway, right? But if your children are anything like my children, those costumes only get worn twice (maybe 3 times if we’re having a great year).  Once for the pumpkin patch, once for Halloween Time at Disneyland, and one for the 31st.  Then those costumes go back into the closet never to be seen or worn again.

Did you know that if we all were to swap half of the costumes kids wear at Halloween, we’d reduce annual landfill waste 6,250 tons?  That is the equivalent in weight to 2500 mid-size cars!

National Costume Swap Day is October 9th although the Los Angeles Swap is on the 10th. For more information, just visit their website. And if you’re looking for ways to be greener this Halloween, check out this website!

This is a great option! Last night at gymnastics, us mothers were talking about swapping costumes. We all have too many dress-up clothes and it would be so much cheaper and better for the environment if we all trade costumes. The costume swap would offer even a larger selection!
