My daughter is currently rehearsing “How Far I’ll Go” for her school’s Spring Talent Show, a song she grew a fondness for after Disney released Moana in theaters last year. The film, which features music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), tells the story of an audacious teen who sets out on a daring adventure to save her people.
As the daughter of the chief of a Polynesian tribe, Moana (voiced by Auli‘i Cravalho) is called by the ocean to reunite a mystical relic with a goddess. When a blight strikes her island, resulting in the scarcity of fish and dying vegetation, Moana sets out on a quest to find Maui, the legendary demigod who may be instrumental in helping her save her people. Moana is particularly remarkable for its cinematography and music. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song in this year’s Academy Awards.
The story of Moana was inspired by the great explorers who navigated the Pacific and discovered the many islands of Oceania. The rebirth of exploration inspired the filmmakers and the development of heroine character Moana. Moana is compelling because she dreams of becoming a navigator, following in the footsteps of her ancestors. Her journey of self-discovery is a model for those seeking to find their own identity.
Moana is now available on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, On-Demand, Digital HD/3D and Disney Movies Anywhere. Bonus features include a new mini-movie featuring Moana and Maui, a look at how the people, cultures and heritage of the Pacific Islands shaped the story, a Q&A with Auli‘i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Ron Clements and John Muske, four mini-documentaries showcasing the movie’s effects, deleted scenes, deleted song, hidden Easter Eggs and the music video Inner Workings, insider access to the trio behind the film’s music and more.
