With the first month of 2013 nearly complete, I’m realizing how quickly time passes. January was to be the start of new beginnings…a commitment to exercise more and indulge less. Two weeks into the year and my ambitious aspiration to remove sugar from my diet failed miserably. Hence the reason I resolved not to make any resolutions this year. I’m simply working towards more permanent lifestyle changes to improve the health of our family through diet and regular physical activity to combat some of the most preventable and deadly disease our country faces…like heart disease.
You likely know that coronary heart disease is the number 1 cause of death in the United States. But did you know that for 1 in 4 women in this country, it is the primary cause of death (National Heart Lung and Blood Institute)? The stigma that this is a men’s disease must change. Fortunately, organizations like the American Heart Association are raising awareness and funds to educate and assist women with disease-prevention strategies. Their Go Red For Women movement has helped save 627,000 lives in the past 10 years.
February is American Heart Month, and to help raise awareness and support for women in this country, Mimi’s Cafe has partnered with the American Heart Association for the second annual Mimi’s Goes Red campaign. If you visit your local Mimi’s Cafe restaurant February 1st on National Wear Red Day, wearing red of course, you’ll receive a free cup of Mimi’s Signature Soup. And throughout the month, anyone who donates $1 will receive a heart-shaped tribute card to inscribe and display on the iconic red dress standee. Those who donate $5 will receive a limited-edition sparkle red dress lapel pin. One hundred percent of the donations received will go to the American Heart Association, which I personally find impressive. To recognize those who donate, Mimi’s Cafe will also give out $30 in savings and a free cup of Mimi’s soup.If you are unable to visit a local Mimi’s Cafe Restaurant, you can donate on their website.
In addition, Mimi’s Cafe go red online with a Facebook challenge where fans can learn about heart health and win prizes. Stay tuned for additional information about Mimi’s Twitter party on heart health and their photo contest which will invite fans to take a photo with Mimi’s red dress display and upload through Instagram or Facebook to help raise awareness and encourage others to support the campaign.
Win It! TWO of you will win a $25 gift card to Mimi’s Cafe. Simply leave me a comment with one reason you are passionate about this campaign. Comments will close on February 12th, 2013 at 11:59 PM PST.

In the last year my mother has had two aortic aneurysm dissections. A month after the last dissection she was back in the hosptial because of a bleeding issue. I have a young niece (19 months old) who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (essentially half a heart) and I myself have DVT.

I am passionate about this campaign because I lost my own mother to heart problems; heart problems that in her day were largely ignored and heart attacks were considered then a men’s health issue.

As a nurse, it seems that women’s heart health and screening always had taken a back seat to men’s. I’m so glad this campaign exists. Heart disease doesn’t discriminate.

I think that more women need to know the possibilities of heart disease. It’s great that a company is trying to get the word out.
