If you are a regular here, you know that I work as a neonatal intensive care nurse. I often stand back in awe of how parents trust my knowledge and clinical expertise to take care of their most precious of lives. Our goal as a discipline, is to empower parents with knowledge and training to care for their babies once they go home.
Moms, you don’t have to be a nurse to know that when it comes to your families’ health, you are the advocate and manager. And what a responsibility that is! Recent recalls regarding pediatric cold medicines are incentive enough to keep track of the latest information regarding medications. With thousands of “medical” websites readily accessible, it’s difficult for moms to know where to turn for accurate medical information.
Drugs.com is “is the most popular, comprehensive and up-to-date source of drug information online, providing free, accurate and independent advice on more than 24,000 prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines & natural products.” The site has recently released MedNotes, “a free, online personalized medication management program that can be used to track your family’s medication profiles.” To get started, you simply create a profile for each family member who has medications that you’d like to keep track of. Enter the names of all medications being taken and register to receive drug safety and interaction alerts. You can also sign up to receive drug and specific condition news released by the FDA.
What I like about the site is that it empowers the public to take responsibility for their own health care. Too often I find that we are heavily reliant on the health care system. Credible websites, like Drugs.com make it easier for moms to perform their role as chief health officer!
