It seems like overnight my son developed this incredible fascination with all-things LEGO! Of all the toys he’s owned, it’s his LEGOs that he always goes back to. As a mom, I appreciate the endless number of creative ways to play and engage my son’s imagination. As you’re probably aware, there are a wide variety of sets for children as young as 1 and as old as 12. From Disney and Princess-themed sets to my son’s new favorite, the Ninjago series, there really is a LEGO product for children of all ages.

My son has just started exploring some of the more complicated sets, while my daughter simply enjoys putting the colorful bricks together. One of our favorite new products is the LEGO DUPLO Read & Build sets that were just released. DUPLO is LEGO’s toddler and preschool line, designed for children ages 1 1/2 to 5. These are the sets I started both of my children with because the pieces are larger (twice the size of conventional LEGO bricks) and easier to put together. The sets definitely contain less pieces and the instructions for building are straightforward. And I love the fact that even with the DUPLO sets, children can exercise their creativity and use their imaginations to build whatever they desire…even if it’s not in the “manual.”

The Read & Build sets are unique in that they contain a colorful board book and a story-related set so parents and children can engage, learn, and play together. For many children, this is their very first LEGO set and I really like the fact that children can listen while mom or dad reads the story and can then build the characters from the story. It’s an innovative concept, and as you’ll see in the video below, relatively straightforward.

My son is really at the upper age limit for this particular set so you’ll see that he puts the characters from Grow Caterpillar Grow! together quickly. But that doesn’t mean he’s “done” with the set. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Both him and his sister have been playing and building unique, imaginative characters and I’ve been using the book to continue our adventures in reading.

The Read & Build sets are a great way for parents and children to engage together in creative play and I really like the concept of incorporating reading (learning) into LEGO play. There are three sets, each of which retails for just $12.99.
