Lattes On the Cheap

Posted by Caryn Bailey 2 Comments

With all the money I spend at a certain coffee shop, I should own a part of it…like a table or a brick…right?  I just love my coffee.  Unfortunately, I like the “froofy” drinks…the mochas and lattes and ice-blended drinks that cost the most.

Last week I had the opportunity to take some latte lessons from National Barista Champ Heather Perry.  This is the second time I’ve seen her work her magic with coffee and I was just as impressed!  She showed us how to make cappuccinos, lattes, and mochas…for CHEAP!  Heather Perry is a two-time US Barista Champion and has appeared on the Food Network, Discovery Channel, and has a Guinness Book World Record for building the world’s largest espresso machine.

If you’re like me, and struggle to get enough sources of daily calcium, then you’ll be thrilled to learn that this is an excellent way to get in both calcium and Vitamin D.  And drinking three glasses of low or nonfat milk daily, is an effective way to maintain a healthy weight.  What better way to reap the benefits of milk with a mocha?  Here are a few recipes, courtesy of got milk?:

Classic Mocha

Cost: $.90/serving

Ingredients:
1 tbsp. of your favorite chocolate syrup or powder
2 oz. espresso or choice of strong coffee
10 oz. steamed milk
Begin by brewing your 2 shots or 2 oz. of espresso using either an espresso machine or strong brewing method, such as a moka pot.  Take a 12 oz. cup and place your espresso at the bottom.  Then add your favorite chocolate and mix well.  Heat your milk by steaming it using your espresso machine, or heat the milk separately and use a hand frother until the desired amount of froth is created.  Fill cup with the heathed milk and top with whipped cream, if desired.
Spiced Latte

Cost: $1/serving
Ingredients:
1 Star Anise
3 Cloves
1/2 Cinnamon Stick
1/2 Vanilla Bean
8 oz. Milk
2 oz. Espresso or Strong Coffee
Begin by brewing your 2 shots or 2 oz. of espresso using either an espresso machine or a strong brewing method, such as a moka pot. Combine spices and milk and heat together by either steaming or by slowly heating it up on the stove over medium heat, and then whipping it using an electric hand frother until the desired amount of forth is created.  This will not only heat the milk but also gently infuse the flavors of the spices into the milk.  Place your espresso at the bottom of the cup and top with spiced milk.

Breve Blast

Cost: $.60/serving
Ingredients:
2 oz. espresso or choice of strong coffee
1 oz. vanilla syrup
4 oz. milk
Begin by brewing your 2 shots or 2 oz. of espresso using either an espresso machine or a strong brewing methos, such as a moka pot.  Place at the bottom of a 16 oz. cup and add your syrup.  Top with 8 oz. cold milk.  Gulp down for a quick jumpstart.

In January, the company unveiled the first Milk Mustache ad of 2010 with Rebecca Romijn.  This her second milk mustache ad and includes her with her twin daughters.  The goal of this campaign is to spread the word about the health benefits of drinking milk, which include a reduction in the risk of osteoporosis for women, the building and maintenance of strong bones and lean muscle, and energy.  Additionally, Rebecca Romijn and Anita Renfroe kicked off the Great Gallon Give program which encourages moms to put milk on their family table in 2010.  Two hundred thousand gallons of milk will be given away online and at 20 events across the country.  Milk (which is as affordable as 25 cents a glass) should be a part of every meal.

Right now, you can pass a “virtual” gallon of milk to your friends on Facebook.  For each virtual gallon passed, the company will donate $1 to Feeding America (America’s largest network of food banks serving more than 25 million people facing hunger) up to $100,000.  You can also enter to win a year’s supply of milk at whymilk.com.

I did not receive compensation for this post. The information was supplied by the company at the media events I attended.
