Latino Americans on PBS Documents 500 Years of Hispanic History

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

This is part of a compensated campaign with Latina Mom Bloggers and Ford.  However, all opinions expressed are my own.

A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots
― Marcus Garvey

As I sat completing some paperwork for my son recently, I suddenly had a light bulb moment.  My children are bicultural, but because of how I was raised, it’s not a fact that is always at the forefront of my mind.  My son is at an age where he can understand some basic facts about his origin and I want my children to grow up proud of their Hispanic culture, even if it only represents half of who they are.

We’re in the midst of Hispanic Heritage Month, and one of the ways we’re celebrating is by getting “schooled” on our roots. PBS, in partnership with Ford, is currently debuting a fantastic three-part, six-hour series documenting the history, contributions, and experiences of Latinos who helped shape our country over the past 500 years.

When I first learned Ford was providing funding for this series, I was surprised.  Through my years working with brands such as Ford, I was made aware of the fact that the brand understands the impact Latinos have made in our communities. Their support for and commitment to this community runs deep.

Latino Americans

Last week, we watched as Latino Americans served in World War II, despite the discrimination they faced and learned about the “new” Latino and their fight for civil rights.  Tonight, episodes 5 and 6 will air on PBS from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm EST. We’ll learn about the formation of the new “Chicano” identity, born out of a generation of Mexican Americans frustrated by discrimination and poverty, the push for better education, and the entry of Latinos into the political process.

Most of what I learned about my culture came from history classes as a young girl.  It’s wonderful that programs like Latino Americans now exist to help families understand the immense contributions Hispanics have lent to our country.  Whether your family’s roots like in Latin countries, or you identify with another culture, Latino Americans is enlightening and helped me become more self-aware.

Join me tonight as we continue the story of Latino Americans who struggled through immigration and anguish, seeking a better life in this country. If you prefer to watch the series in Spanish, you can view it on Vme TV every Friday at 10 PM EST through October 25th, 2013.
