How to Have a Smarter, Healthier Kid! *Giveaway*

Posted by Caryn Bailey 22 Comments

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is trixx. Congrats!

It might surprise you that despite the fact that I’m a nurse, I opt for alternative medicine when it makes sense.  My son has had antibiotics less than a handful of times in his life, and my daughter has never received an antibiotic.  We incorporate traditional and herbal supplements into our diet and work with our physician to find natural ways of helping our bodies heal themselves.  That’s not to say that I won’t take Motrin when I have a headache or use antibiotics when deemed necessary.  But I firmly believe in preventive, as opposed to curative medicine.

Earlier this year, my son was diagnosed with food allergies.  While it was a little rough trying to figure out what to feed him, we’ve managed to find a variety of foods that don’t include milk or eggs.  In order to ensure he’s getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, we give him supplements each day.  And we recently added Omega-3 into the mix, since he will only eat fish when he feels like it.

We know that Omega-3s are important before, during, and after pregnancy, particularly for brain and eye development.  While adults can obtain supplements in pill form, children aren’t able to swallow these pills.  Twinlab recently launched their new Omega-3 Powder in single serving packages for kids.  Each “stick” contains 127 mg of Omega-3s per serving.  The company derives them from distilled fish oil so that both DHA and EPA forms of Omega-3s are provided.  The powder is free from artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or sweeteners.

The single-serving packages make it easy and convenient to tote.  You simply mix the powder in juice, water, applesauce or other foods.  I highly recommend mixing it in something sweet, since the powder is bland and doesn’t really have much of a taste.  I mixed it in water initially, and my son wouldn’t drink it.  We had the most success when it was mixed in with his applesauce.

Omega-3’s are important healthy development of the brain, heart, and eyes.  A 30-count box retails for $27.99 and is available at select retailers nationwide.

Win It! One of you will win a 30-count box of the Children’s Omega-3 Powder.  Simply leave me a comment with something you liked or learned on the site.  Comments will close on July 6, 2010 at 11:59 PM PST.  One comment per person, please (unless you do the extra credit). I learned that Twinlab was created in 1968 when founder David Blechman leveraged his 20 years of expertise in the pharmaceutical industry to develop and market a liquid protein supplement.
