Winter has come early and quite abruptly here in Southern California! While we’re traditionally known for moderate temperatures, even in December, the past few weeks have been so cold we’re breaking out the scarves, gloves, and mittens and turning on our fireplace each night to stay warm.
Since my children own practically zero cold weather items, I thought I’d tackle another crochet project. You might remember that I taught you how to crochet a Ruffle Scarf earlier this year. Walmart just introduced some gorgeous new yarn from Red Heart, including the Boutique Unforgettable Yarn which I’ll be using to crochet a beanie and a scarf for my daughter. I love the vibrant colors in this multi-color yarn (so you don’t have to switch colors during the crochet process) and its super soft texture (making it cozy for warming little heads).
To get started, you’ll need the following items, available at your local Walmart:
1 ball of Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable Yarn
1 size H crochet hook
Scissors
Darning Needle (used to tuck in the ends and to sew the flower onto the hat)
Button
With this one ball of yarn, you’ll be able to make a hat that will fit a child, a medium-sized flower, and a fringed scarf, plus you’ll still have a small amount of yarn leftover. If you’re a very visual person, you might search YouTube for a video tutorial that will walk you through each step.
Starting will likely be the most difficult part because you will be increasing each row until the desired crown size. However, this projects is simple enough for even a beginner to attempt. This pattern uses single crochet, and for the last row, I used a reverse single crochet to give it a slightly different look. I also crocheted a simple flower and embellished it with a button in the center.
Tips:
1. Use a stitch marker so you don’t lose track (I used a bobby pin). It should be noted that every row starts where your maker is.
2. I used a size H hook, but if you want a smaller beanie, go down a crochet hook size. If you want a larger beanie, go up a crochet hook size.
3. If the ring is a bit large when you start, pull the tail to close up the ring
4. When the hat is complete, use your Darning Needle to weave in the ends of the yarn
For the flower, I used this pattern with a single strand of yarn (the pattern actually calls for a double strand)
For the scarf, I used this pattern. I didn’t switch the colors since I used Red Heart’s Boutique Unforgettable Yarn.
