Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.
-Abraham Lincoln
My mother used to tell me that happiness went beyond circumstances and things. She strived to teach me to have the kind of joy that lies deep within our soul so that I was unwavering when the circumstances of life threatened that happiness. And even when trials did arise, she modeled the kind of attitudes and perspectives that offered hope and optimism.
This Tuesday, February 24th, 2015, the heartwarming, award-winning Disney film Big Hero 6 will be released on Disney Movies Anywhere, Blu-ray and DVD. Inspired by the original Marvel Comics superhero team, the film follows the story of robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada and his personal companion robot Baymax. After a personal tragedy, the two join forces with a diverse group of friends as they uncover a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo. The film’s comic-book-style action compliments the humor and heart of these unforgettable characters in a film that will appeal to toda la familia.
In Big Hero 6, audiences are introduced to a new character in Baymax, who’s job is to help people, specifically Hiro. When Baymax recognizes that Hiro is grieving, he strives to help him not only physically but emotionally. Their initial introduction is amusing and one my kids absolutely loved. But one of the more poignant moments occurs near the end of the film when Baymax plays back clips where his brother Tadashi runs tests on him during development.
Much like Baymax, I’m constantly striving to infuse moments of happiness daily within my own family. Here are just a few things we do regularly como encontrar felicidad cada dia.
How to Create Happiness Daily:
1. Focus on the good. Every day, I ask my kids to share what the best part of their time away was. Some days, my kids come home tired or disheartened after a long day at school. And while we do talk through what has occurred, I always start on a positive note, encouraging my kids to focus on what was good and went right during their day at school.
2. Model positivity. Some days I don’t feel like smiling or being joyful, particularly when I’ve spent half a day getting my car fixed or more time than expected on the freeway. But I’ve noticed that my attitude sets the tone for our home and when I show my kids that despite life’s circumstances, there are still many things to celebrate and be joyful about, it’s contagious. They also learn not to be moved by these unexpected trials and circumstances.
3. Show them affection. My son may wiggle away from me when I hug him at school drop-off in the mornings, but he knows without a doubt that I love him. The power of touch has been well-documented and proven to deepen relationships, relieve stress, and alter perspective.
4. Celebrate their successes. Verbal affirmation is important for a child’s self-esteem. Every day, I strive to say something positive to each of my children. It can be as simple as praising my daughter’s desire to help me cook or recognizing my son’s voracious appetite for reading.
5. Tell them you love them. Earlier this week, I told my son I love him like I do every day. His response in that moment was, “Mom, I know.” Admittedly, I thought his response was a bit amusing, but I proceeded to ask him how he knew. His response? “Because you tell me every day.” While I wholeheartedly believe in backing up words with actions, I still find it vital to tell my kids I love them every single day, particularly when things don’t go as planned. So even when my daughter spills her drink all over the table or my son forgets that he has a special project due the next morning, they know that my love for them is unwavering and irrespective of anything they say or do.
