How Does Your Family Stay Safe Online? *Giveaway*

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winners are Suzie and Clarissa. Congrats!

Online Safety…I never imagined that I’d have to worry about what my five year old is watching on YouTube and being safe online. In fact, I never imagined my five year old would even know WHAT YouTube is. But the reality is that we live in a digital age where technology continues to advance at lightning speeds.  Rather than shield my children from the internet, I want to educate them and empower them to make smart decisions online.

Club Penguin

This week, I’m heading to the Club Penguin headquarters in Kelowna, Canada for the first ever Media Summit, where we’ll take a look at the Club Penguin Studio, hear from industry leading experts about online safety and cyber bullying, and get some tips on raising a good digital citizen. I personally find the itinerary to be compelling since I’m raising two small children in an online world where filters do not always guarantee safety.

Club Penguin

If you’re not familiar with Club Penguin, it is one the largest virtual worlds for children and places a major emphasis on offering a fun, safe, online experience.  In addition to being ad-free, Club Penguin uses filtering technology and live moderators to prevent swearing and compromise of personal information. The game is free and designed for children ages 6-14, however membership options are available. Some of the benefits to becoming a member include unlimited access to member-only areas, exclusive gifts at special events, the ability to style your penguin with new outfits and upgrade/decorate your igloo, and the ability to adopt up to 20 puffles in any color.  Additional benefits are also offered during promotion events, such as the ability to suit up as your favorite Marvel Super Hero or Super Villain during April 25th-May 7th, 2013. Membership plans are very affordable and start at just $5.00 a month!

What do you want to know about online safety or Club Penguin in general?  I’d love to share your questions with the team!

Win It!  TWO of you will win a  6-month membership (ARV $39.95) to Club Penguin. Simply leave me a comment telling me how you keep your kids safe online OR leave a question for the team at Club Penguin. Comments will close on April 25th, 2013 at 11:59 PM PST.

I monitor what they do when they are online. They are not allowed online unless I’m in the room with them. My 7 year old used to watch YouTube videos and I would let her watch while I left the room to make lunch. Unfortunately, even when watching something innocent on YouTube such as My Little Pony, one click and all of a sudden it’s no longer clips from the TV show, it’s a dubbed version with lots of cussing. So now she’s not allowed on YouTube unless I’m here too.
