Holiday Gift Guide 2009: Wilton Gingerbread House Kit *Giveaway*

I grew up as an only child so I spent a lot of time doing things with my parents (specifically my mom).  We read stories and played games and dressed dolls and did crafts.  Every year around the holidays, we would go out together and buy a gingerbread house kit.  I have so many fond memories of our holidays together and this is just one of them.

For the first time (I know it’s early), we decided that my son was old enough to actually participate and enjoy making a gingerbread house.  Of course he needed a lot of help.  But he was talking about making the gingerbread house all evening (he even told my mom about it on the phone this evening).  I definitely want to continue this with our children in the years to come.

Thanks to Wilton, we had an opportunity to pick out a Gingerbread House Kit from their collection.  Knowing that a 2 year old wouldn’t persist through the assembly and drying process, we chose the Pre-Baked and Pre-Assembled Gingerbread House Kit (which was really smart).  I highly recommend this kit for those of you with young children who may not have the dexterity and attention span necessary to assemble a gingerbread house.  At this point, decorating is what really excites them (at least that’s the case for my 2 1/2 year old).

I had no idea that Wilton has been around for 80 years!  They make it so easy for people like you and I to make incredible looking (and tasting) cakes, cookies, and other sweet treats!  I’m sure you’re familiar with the company but here is a little overview from the site:

You don’t have to be a Martha Stewart to create professional looking cakes for any occasion.  Their website is incredibly informative and a great resource for everything from recipes to cake decorating to wedding planning!

But back to their gingerbread houses…which by the way, are so easy to assemble and decorate and a lot of fun!  All three of us got in on the fun…check out our video here:

While I’d like to bake and cook everything from scratch, it just isn’t feasible for me.  That’s why this pre-baked, pre-assembled kit is perfect!  The kit comes with everything you’ll need to decorate the gingerbread house, however, you can also purchase additional items such as their Gingerbread House Holiday Candies Assortment, Gingerbread House Handmade Icing Decorations, Gingerbread House Stand Kit, and Gingerbread House Frosty White Icing Mix (which were all used in the decorating of our gingerbread house).  To be honest, the kit came with enough icing to decorate the entire house and we STILL had plenty left for my husband to taste!  If you need gingerbread decorating ideas, just check out their site! Each house also offers it’s own ideas on decorating.  Just check the insert that comes with the house or online.

Since we did this so early in the season, I’m not sure how long it will last.  But no worries…we’ll be buying another before the holiday season is over!  This particular kit retails for $16.49 but Wilton offers several in prices that range from $12.99 to $49.99.

  5. What a sweet story about your family — both your own little family and when you were little! I, too, was an only child and gingerbread houses figured prominently in our holiday traditions. Maybe it’s an only child thing? 🙂

    As for what I’ve got my eye on at Wilton… that would have to be the great cupcake stand! Did you see the one that holds 36 cupcakes?? I probably don’t need such a big one… but just this week I was wishing I had something for my son’s birthday cupcakes. So that’s got my vote! 🙂

  6. As far as what product I like on your Holiday Gift Guide — that’s a toughie, because they are all great! Kudos to you (and to Shannon!) for putting together such great products for your audience!! YAY for cool mommies who work TOGETHER!! 🙂

    I know what my kids (okay, husband) want though… and it’s that Nintendo DSi. Why try to fight the power? 🙂 I’ll probably end up enjoying it even more than they do….

  16. I found that they have a HUGE assortment of cake pans, I especially like the Stork pan for a new baby. I am a cake decorator, it’s a hobby. I can’t believe how great this giveaway is, it’s wonderful. I’m like a kid in a candy store!

  17. I love the Chocolate Pro melting pot. I am always making chocolate dipped strawberries and for Christmas I love to make white chocolate pretzels so this would be perfect for me.

  35. main entry: I like all there decorating supplies they sell and I love collecting the tips for the icing decorating bags and the numerous ways you can use one certain tip end to decorate, the star tip is so good to use for the beginner yet perfect for the person who can create well, try it sometime you will love the results you get. great giveaway wilton is simply the best

  120. I found a cordless Cookie Press on the Wilton site I’d love to own. It’s the Cookie Master Plus Cordless Cookie Press #2104-4008, $39.99, I might have to purchase. And, I love the Cupcakes ‘N More 38 Count Large Dessert Stand #307-651 ($41.99), which would be so perfect for displaying holiday cookies and cupcakes. I love Wilton and have purchased their pre-baked Gingerbread House Kits for the last six years. Now, they have expanded on the number and sizes of their kits. I also love the recipes I find on their web site, like the Fruit Filled Candy Cups for the Cupcakes N’ More 38 Count Dessert Stand! Yumm

  214. I found out that Wilton lists a million ways to make cookies and candy, there is one I want to try. An ornament (chocolate) filled with candy. I thought Wilton just sold the items to make them 🙂

  246. I really like the giant cupcake pans. Gingerbread House making is part of our christmas tradition. We usually make them the weekend of Thanksgiving, but I had to work all weekend so we will be making them later. Our kids really enjoy making their own gingerbread house and cookies.

  249. I saw the cute little silicone cupcake baking thing with the little feet. They have many ideas on how to decorate cupcakes like different characters. (Santa, Clown, etc) They also have a book called Cupcake fun that would be nice to have.

  262. I found a Spongebob cupcake stand that would be great for birthdays in this house. My youngest daughter has had a Spongebob party the last 2 years and plans to have another one next year. Thank you!
