Now that my son is in preschool, and it’s cold and flu season, I’m being stricter about enforcing hand-washing. For some reason, as soon as the weather cools, sickness invades. My son and I already have minor colds and I’m not looking forward to what could be a really bad season for sickness.
I was recently contacted to review The Shandle, “a hand washing reminder that helps kids create a healthy hand-washing habit.” The Shandle attaches to the toilet seat and, after allowing it to adhere for 24 hours, holds the weight of both the seat and the lid. The Shandle is available in a variety of cute characters with hand-washing reminders printed on both sides. As a nurse and a mom, hand-washing is something I enforce with my family on a consistent basis. The fact that the product could help teach and instill this principle in our household with my children (and my husband for that matter) was what peaked my interest in The Shandle.
To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure when I received it if it stuck to the seat or the lid (but I figured it out quickly…the seat). It was easy to install (just peel and stick…and wait a day to use it). The Shandle contains an anti-microbial handle and ensures that children (and adults for that matter) never have to touch a dirty toilet seat. My son thinks the little monkey is adorable and wants to wash his hands just like the little monkey does. He knows after he eats or plays or uses the potty that he needs to wash his hands. This is a great reminder, although, right now, he’s only using his little potty (rather than the big potty). But the fact that it’s in the bathroom, on the toilet seat, means he sees it regularly…a great way to continually reinforce the principle of hand-washing.
I do think The Shandle is a cute reminder for hand-washing and I like the fact that one never has to touch the toilet seat. However, I tend to keep our toilets relatively clean, so I think this product would be even more important for germ-filled places like preschool bathrooms where multiple children are using the same potty. So how do we get it into schools?

Now there is an AWESOME idea!!!!!! I’m going to have to order some!
These things are so cute… I could use one for The Hubs!! (he washes his hands… he just nees to remember to close the lid) 🙂
