In California, it is illegal to drive and talk on a mobile phone without a hands-free headset (just ask my husband). But more than that, distracted drivers are unsafe. I’m actually good about not talking and driving. When I do talk, I use the speakerphone so I’m still hands-free. The idea situation would be to use a hands-free headset.
Last month, Motorola launched a Get Smarter Responsible Driving Awareness Campaign to educate consumers on ways to stay safe, responsible, and legal while communicating on the road. As part of the campaign, the company developed a mobile Android application which helps consumers “get smart” on local hands-free legislation. If you’re traveling by car this summer, be sure to download the free application so you’re up to date on state laws. My husband downloaded the application to his Droid. The application locates where you are through GPS and gives you details on hand-held, texting, and novice driver bans through each state. For example, in Tennessee, there is a hand-held ban for novice drivers and a texting ban for all drivers.
In conjunction with their campaign, Motorola released their new headset, H17txt with Motospeak, which reads text messages to consumers in real time. The headset also allows users the option of creating an automated response to alert those who send text messages that they will respond when they reach their destination.
I started using the headset about a week ago. It was easy to set up and provides a clear means of communicating (I don’t get static like I have had with previous headsets). The head set provides a voice prompt which alerts you to the battery level, helps you connect, and provides updates. You can also listen to streaming music, media, and navigation but I’m still trying to figure out how to do those things. This is the first headset I’ve owned that flips open to talk and closed to end a call and I think it’s brilliant. I also like the various wearing options (I’m not a fan of having a headset rest in my ear). I am not able to use Motospeak on my Palm, but my husband has a Droid and can use it with his phone.
H17txt with Motospeak retails for $99.99 and is available online and at Best Buy. For more information about hands-free communication and legislation, visit Motorola. You can also follow them on Twitter and Facebook, to learn more about hands-free laws.
