Last week, I had the privilege and honor of speaking with my daughter’s girl scout troop about my role as a pediatric nurse, and how the skills I learned as a girl scout prepared me for my career. Skills like identifying and solving problems in the community and displaying positive values are invaluable as girls grow and mature. Despite the challenges we have faced over the past year due to COVID-19, the girls continued to meet, completing service projects, teaching a younger group of Girl Scouts and continuing to work on bridging. We are entering Girl Scout Season, one of the most important and renowned programs. And while things might look different this year, I’ll tell you how you can support your local Girl Scouts with your favorite Girl Scout Cookie.

Girl Scouts
At the core of the Girls Scouts is the development of leaders. All-girl and girl-led, the Girl Scouts inspire girls to practice varied skills, explore their potential and take on leadership positions. The result is girls who develop a strong sense of self, seek challenges and learn from setbacks, display positive values, form and maintain healthy relationships, and identify and solve problems in the community.
Girl Scout Cookie Season
Like many Girl Scouts, I have wonderful memories of Girl Scout Cookie Season. With my mom’s help, I’d sell cookies at her place of employment, around my neighborhood, and to our family and friends.
Girls who participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program gain entrepreneurial skills including money management, people skills, goal-setting, decision-making, and business ethics. It is through the Cookie Program that girls practice entrepreneurship, learn critical life skills, explore the great outdoors, and engage in hands-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities.
2021 Cookie Program Highlights
This year, Girl Scout Cookie season runs January 11 to March 7, 2021. At present, Girl Scouts are selling cookies online and in the community with safe cookie buying options (look for the Girl Scouts door hangers). Beginning February 12th, look for Girl Scout Cookie Booth Sales in front of grocery and retail stores (dependent on local COVID-19 guidelines). National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend runs February 19 – 21, 2021.
New this year, Girl Scouts of Orange County have partnered with Grub Hub to have cookies delivered to your door (in select areas).
This year’s cookie lineup includes the following:
- Thin Mints® (vegan)
- Girl Scout S’mores™ (vegan)
- Caramel DeLites®
- Peanut Butter Patties (vegan)
- Shortbread
- Lemonades® (vegan)
- Peanut Butter Sandwich
- Toast-Yay!™ (new for 2021, this French toast–inspired cookie is dipped in icing and full of flavor)
- Gluten free Caramel Chocolate Chip
Each package of Girl Scout cookies is $5.00 (Gluten-free cookies are $6.00). If you prefer not to buy cookies for yourself, you can purchase a tax-deductible Cookie Share, which donates cookies to our country’s military and local food banks. This is a very popular option and every year, more than 50,000 boxes of cookies are donated to charitable organizations across the country.
Every cookie package purchased is an investment in our future leaders and the money earned is used to power their opportunities and adventures. I also appreciate that 100 percent of the net revenue stays local as an investment in girls and their leadership capabilities. Together, troops decide how proceeds will be used and all revenue earned stays within the local community to support these life-changing programs.
