As a child, my parents didn’t think twice about the 3 of us sitting together watching the latest sitcom. Shows like Full House offered families a way to connect through humor, emotion, and real-life situations and characters we could relate to. Fast forward to 2016, and the options available on prime time networks are lacking. The need for family-friendly entertainment compelled us to sign up for Netflix.
Even before Fuller House was announced, I often thought about what it would be like if the show was brought back for today’s generation. My kids quickly took to the show and it often replaced even their favorite cartoons.
This Friday, the first season of Fuller House will debut on Netflix. The series continues the story of D.J. Tanner-Fuller, who’s recently widowed with 3 boys. Overwhelmed and grieving the loss of her husband, D.J. moves into her childhood home and finds a sisterhood of support with her best friend Kimmy Gibbler and her younger sister Stephanie Tanner. Together, they form a new family and tackle everything from teen angst to dating as a single mom.
Watching the show with my kids arouses so many memories of my parents and I gathered on the sofa, laughing and connecting as a family. There is a familiarity about the show that my kids won’t get, yet the stories are fresh with a wide audience appeal.
