With a passion for film, I spend a lot of time seeing and writing about movies. Very often, our family previews the latest films before they’re released in theaters so there really isn’t much we haven’t seen. With 2 small children, the majority of what we see is animated, but more and more I’m seeing a change in the content they are drawn to. I was a bit surprised when my son mentioned wanting to see Sony’s Action Comedy film Paul Blart: Mall Cop and its successor, which was released in theaters earlier this year.
Both films star Keven James as Paul Blart, an aspiring police officer who settles on a job as a security guard at his local mall when he learns a medical condition prohibits him from pursuing a career in law enforcement. Because of his passion for justice, Blart takes his job very seriously, in spite of his colleagues more apathetic approach. When a security threat to the mall threatens the lives of those closest to him, Paul Blart shines as a real-life, criminal-fighting hero.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 takes place six years after the original film and we find the infamous mall security guard headed to Vegas with his teenage daughter before she goes to college. But relaxation won’t come easy for Blart as a criminal threat to the hotel begins to unfold and we find our favorite mall cop once again saving the day.
What I appreciate about both films is their simplicity in plot and the slapstick comedy that had both of my kids actually laughing out loud throughout the film. Admittedly, I was surprised at how funny the films are and how much my kids enjoyed them.
While the experience of seeing a brand new film in a theater can’t be matched, I try to recreate a similar environment at home by including homemade popcorn and drinks, special snacks, and a quiet, low-light experience. The cost alone is often prohibitive so when we aren’t screening theatrical films for review, we tend to have a regular family movie night every Friday as a way to re-connect, relax from a long week, and simply enjoy film as an art.
In honor of the DVD/Blu-ray release of Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, I’m sharing Paul Blart’s Safety Smarts! These free printable safety sheets teach children important safety lessons such as stranger danger, cyber safety, and how to identify dangerous situations.
Host your own movie night when you purchase Paul Blart Mall Cop and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 as a combo-pack for just $24.87 at Walmart.
