Five Easy Back to School Breakfast Tips For Busy Families *Giveaway*

Posted by Caryn Bailey 576 Comments

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is Monique R. Congrats!

Some mornings, when I’ve actually had a chance to sleep for 7+ hours uninterrupted, I’ll wake up before everyone else and tip-toe downstairs to bring preparing for our day. I love that time between 5 and 7 when the sun is just starting to rise.  The quiet mixed in with the occasional bird chirping or dog barking is quite serene. I use this time for a variety of things, most importantly, breakfast.

You’ve likely heard about the importance of breakfast.  That 6-10 hour period of time when your body is restoring itself, is also a time devoid of food and nutrients. Everything from a child’s behavior to an adult’s struggle with weight loss could be affected by failing to eat breakfast every single day. Not only do children (and adults) who eat breakfast have lower body weights than those who don’t, they also display improved behavior and are better able to perform academically in school.

Children grow rapidly and regular intake of food is vital to ensure proper physical, intellectual, and emotional health.  But how do busy families ensure their kids are getting a healthy nutrient-rich breakfast every single day?  Nutritionist and author Dayle Hayes, who serves as a member of the Kellogg’s Breakfast Council, knows how important breakfast is. Not only is she a mom, she is an advocate for improving school nutrition. She provided the following tips last week when a few of the K Champs participated in a virtual roundtable:

1. It is vital that children get calcium, vitamin D, potassium, and fiber each morning and a breakfast of cereal and milk helps fulfill those nutrient needs.

2.  It is more difficult to fill in the nutrient gap later in the day, which is why breakfast is essential. Every single day.

3.  Make breakfast more nutritious and appealing by  keeping an assortment of frozen berries  in the freezer and adding them to a bowl of cereal or layering in a granola and yogurt parfait.

4.  Have placemats, bowls and spoons set out on the table along with your family’s favorite cereals the night before. In the morning, grab the milk and you’re set for breakfast.

5.  When time is limited in the morning, prepare bags of cereal for kids to eat on the ride to school (we’ve done this so many times!).  Toss in string cheese, fresh cut vegetables, fruit (fresh or dried) and nuts. You can also use this as an afterschool snack!

We love breakfast in our household, but I know that with school set to start in just a few days, I’ll be struggling to get both kids dressed, fed, and off to their respective schools. We’ll be eating a lot of cereal, milk, and fruit to get us to the weekend when we can sit down as a family for a more elaborate meal (I’m already thinking of that veggie frittata I want to make!).

What are your best tips for quick, healthy breakfast on the go? I’d love to hear them!

Wake your children up early enough to have breakfast prior to them getting dressed, we don’t want them having to change clothes especially if you have pre-teen or teenage daughters, that is a daunting task LOL

I would say wake them up with enough time to actually sit and eat breakfast. Too many people rush through it, and I found it helped my son not to rush.

Make their own “Fun Mix” cereals- let your kids pick two or three Kelloggs cereals and mix them togather in a large bowl- then bag them up for on the go breakfasts in the car, or to eat just before class at school. A piece of fruit and their choice of milk or fruit beverage completes the meal.

I pack lunches and lay out the boys clothes the night before so we’ll have plenty of time for breakfast in the morning. I always give them a hot, homemade breakfast to start their day and they always, always tell me how much they loved their breakfast and how much better their day is when they start with a full tummy.

My best tip is to plan and prep the night before- cut fruit, make pancakes or waffles, etc. and refrigerate. The next morning you can serve the fruit while you are microwaving your pancakes or toasting your waffles. If cereal is your thing, then set your box, bowl, spoon and cup out the night before so you only have to pour your cereal, milk and juice.

Here’s my breakfast tip. I prepared my kids favorite breakfast sandwiches (ham, egg, and cheese) along with pancakes on the weekends and froze them so all the boys have to do in the morning was heat them up in the microwave for a hot, delicious breakfast. That saved all of us a lot of time in the morning 🙂

A great tip that I use a lot is to make a hot breakfast the night before such as omlettes and pancakes, this way you have more time in the mornings for other things. This helps a lot when you ae in a rush.Just heat & serve and off you go.

I like Kelloggs on Facebook and my best tips are to always have an assortment of quick easy to prepare hot breakfast foods available for your family. I add favorites like homemade strawberry jam or homemade bread and or rolls to encourage they eat a healthy breakfast especially during the school year.

When I make pancakes on the weekend I make a double or triple batch & freeze what we don’t eat that day. Then, during the week, we can grab a couple frozen pancakes, zap them in the microwave & have a quick, easy, hot breakfast to start our day.
