I grew up going to the theater and saw my very first Broadway Musical in LA when I was just 5 years old, thus my love for the arts was born. Our family enjoys all forms of entertainment, but there is something unique and special about going to the theater to see a live performance. My kids have enjoyed The Wizard of Oz, live ice shows, arena spectaculars and even puppet shows, so I’m always looking for unique artistic experiences that will engage and educate them.
One of our favorite venues for live performances is the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The center is well-known for it’s national tours of leading Broadway shows, but a lesser known fact is that the center hosts a dynamic Family Series each year featuring engaging, age-specific productions. The current series began with Schoolhouse Rock Live! and families enjoyed the heartwarming Dr. Seuss classic during a live performance of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
If you’ve yet to discover the series, the center has several productions lined up including Gustafer Yellowgold, John Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean, and The Gruffalo’s Child for children between the ages of 4 and 8, and Twin Infinity for children 7 and older. Here is a brief synopsis of the center’s scheduled productions:
Gustafer Yellowgold: Part pop rock concert, part animated picture book, Gustafer Yellowgold will perform highlights from his previous six albums February 21st and 22nd, 2015. The performance will feature live music, animated illustrations and storytelling. Recommended age: 4-8
John Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean: This unique, live, black-light puppet show will follow the lovable sea creatures and best friends Tank, Bubbles, and Dorsel as they set off on a remarkable journey of discovery. The show debuts March 7th and 8th and will feature music, dance, and audience engagement. Recommended age: 4-8
The Gruffalo’s Child: Inspired by the popular picture book of the same name, this live performance will feature physical storytelling with music, humor, and magic. The show will debut April 18th and 19th, 2015 at the SCFTA. Recommended age: 4-8
Twin Infinity: The third and final installment of The Intergalactic Nemesis debuts at the SCFTA March 21st and 22nd, 2015. The sequel follows the adventures of Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Molly Sloan and her fiancé Ben Wilcott in a period story set in 1942 as they battle a secret society of spies that spans the globe. Featuring more than 1,000 hand-drawn, full-color, hi-resolution and intensely vivid comic book images displayed on a giant screen, 3 actors will play all the parts as one Foley artist and one keyboardist perform the sound effects and music. Recommended age: 7+
Remember that before each performance, families can enjoy free pre-show activities so be sure to arrive at least 1 hour before showtime.
If your family plans to see more than one production, you might consider one of their Series Subscriptions, available for purchase online or at the box office.
