While I adore the change of seasons, fall decorating, and holiday baking, I don’t enjoy the inevitable sickness that comes with this time of year. Cold and flu season is here…earlier than anticipated. I know that because both of my children got sick at the beginning of September and are JUST NOW recovered from coughs and runny noses.
As a nurse, you might be surprised to learn that I use a lot of alternative, complimentary treatments and very little traditional medicine. My son has one course of antibiotics in his 3 1/2 years of life and my daughter has had none (except for some eye drops as a baby).
So how do we stay so healthy, despite the fact that we selectively immunize and rarely stay home? We recently introduced some of Dr. Sears’ Family Essentials into our routine. Before I get into my review, I should let you know that while Dr. Bob Sears is our family pediatrician, this in no way affected my experience or review.
If you’ve ever attempted to get a child to take vitamins, you understand what a chore it can be. I couldn’t wait until my son was past the choking stage so I could move on from the powdered vitamins I mixed in his applesauce. Dr. Sears’ new fruit chews are 100% all-natural and free from artificial colors and flavors. Along with offering a multi-vitamin, Dr. Sears offers an Omega-3 DHA and Immune Supplement. My son already knows the routine…he eats breakfast and then takes his chews. I actually tasted them and found them to be pleasant.
If you are like my mom, and don’t like fish, you understand the importance of taking an Omega-3 DHA supplement. Regardless of whether or not your child eats fish, DHA is essential to the development of the brain, eyes, and nervous system. Dr. Sears’ Omega-3 DHA Soft Gels can be chewed or swallowed and have a pleasant orange flavor. The only drawback is that a child has to take 5 a day.
If I allowed it, my son would snack all. day. long. The bigger challenge is getting him to eat healthy snacks. Dr. Sears’ new whole grain snacks, called Popumz, are 100% natural and contain DHA and protein. I always try foods before my children, and I found that they were flavorful without being too sweet. My son, on the other hand, wasn’t crazy about them, although I’m not exactly sure why. Popumz are low in fat and calories and free from trans fats and high fructose corn syrup.
Dr. Sears’ complete line of Family Essentials is available for purchase online, at Toys R Us and Whole Foods, and select retailers nationwide. For more information, simply visit the website. For parenting advice, visit AskDrSears.com.
