Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting ― J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan
There is something incredibly magical about the story of the little boy who teaches Wendy, George and Michael to fly as they discover Never Land, “where fairies, Lost Boys, mermaids and pirates live and adventures never cease.” After 6o years of enchanting families, Disney released Peter Pan on Blu-ray for the first time.
The story is familiar, but one that never grows old. In fact, the narrator even begins by stating that “all of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.” One evening, when the boys are acting out a story about Peter Pan and the pirates as told by Wendy, their father gets particularly frustrated and tells Wendy that it is time for her to grow up. It is that very night when Peter Pan visits the children, inspiring them to dream, imagine, and fly.
In Never Land, Peter Pan and the children encounter Captain Hook and Mr. Smee, The Lost Boys, and Tiger Lily, and this is where most the film’s adventures take place. They fight pirates, encounter mermaids, and help rescue Indian Princess Tiger Lily. But soon, the children begin missing their home and eventually decide to return to London. Although Wendy invites Peter Pan and the Lost Boys to come home with them, they refuse, opting to stay in Never Land.
All children (and even adults) struggle with the idea of growing up, which is why the story is so relatable to young and old. Wendy is perhaps my favorite character because through their adventures, she learns that growing up is an inevitable part of life and that while we eventually have to mature and take responsibility, we never lose our imagination which keeps us young at heart.
The 2013 Diamond Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack features a new digital restoration of the film with high definition picture and sound. The picture quality is impressive, given the time when the film was first made. And because my children are huge fans of Jake and the Never Land Pirates, the story and some of the characters were not unfamiliar to them.
We’ve come to love Disney’s Diamond Edition releases because the bonus features are spectacular. Here are the bonus features you can expect with the new release of Peter Pan Diamond Edition:
- Disney Intermission
- Growing Up with Nine Old Men
- Deleted Song: Never Smile at a Crocodile
- Deleted Song: The Boatswain Song
- Deleted Scene: The Journey Home
- Deleted Scene: Alternate Arrival
- Introduction by Diane Disney Miller
- Classic DVD Bonus
Peter Pan Diamond Edition is no available in a 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack and retails for $44.99.
