To this day, I am still reminded of the time my son first heard Stuart from Despicable Me say “banana.” The way he said it was as hilarious as the context, and it has since become a running joke in our family. Stuart is one of Gru’s Minions in the film series, and bananas just so happen to be a favorite fruit amongst them. Their obsession with bananas often leads to hilarious, manic-like behavior. The Minions serve as Gru’s henchmen and provide much of the comic relief in the series, as is the case in the latest installment, Despicable Me 3.
Earlier this year, we screened Despicable Me 3 and found ourselves once again immersed in the continuing saga of Gru, Lucy, their three daughters and the Minions. Brought to you by Illumination (Sing, The Secret Life of Pets, Despicable Me), we learn that Gru has been fired from his job at the Anti-Villain League after failing to defeat Balthazar Bratt, an evil mastermind threatening humanity. The loss of his position creates an identity crisis within Gru which is only fueled by the discovery that he has a long-lost twin brother. Dru and Gru were separated early on when their parents divorced and each decided to keep one child. Dru’s admiration of his twin’s villain identity creates a longing to follow in Gru’s footsteps. The loss of his job, reunion with his twin brother, and the growing threat of Balthazar Bratt inspires the former super-villain to rediscover how good it feels to be bad.
Despicable Me 3 stars the voice talents of Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, and Dana Gaier, who reprise their roles from the first two films. Julie Andrews returns as Marlena, Gru’s Mother, and Kristen Wiig and Steve Coogan return as Lucy (Gru’s wife) and Silas Ramsbottom, the director of the Anti-Villain League. Newcomers Trey Parker, Jenny Slate and Nev Sharrel voice the roles of Balthazar Bratt, Valerie Da Vinci, member and new director of the Anti-Villain League, and Agnes.
Despicable Me 3 is the number one comedy of the year and became the third-highest-grossing film of 2017 and the sixth-highest-grossing animated film of all time. The film series is well-loved by audiences because of its relatability, humor, and endearing characters. As a parent, I appreciate that the film touches important topics such as family, friendship, communication and work ethic without patronizing or preaching to audiences. It is engaging and humorous, exactly how an animated kids’ movie should be.
