If you can believe it, I’ve been taking prenatal vitamins for over 4 years now. Over the last 4+ years, I’ve tried a number of different brands and experienced everything from nausea and heartburn to constipation. All of the brands I took required me to take multiple pills including a separate one for DHA. Because I’m still nursing and taking prenatal vitamins, I agreed to try out Nature Made’s new Prenatal Multivitamins with DHA.
Nature Made manufactures vitamins, minerals, and herbal products designed to promote health and recently introduced a Prenatal Multivitamin with 200 mg of DHA in a single softgel. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid and plays an important role in brain and retina development during fetal development and infancy. DHA is an essential nutrient passed from a mother to her child during pregnancy and through breastfeeding. In my experience, these are typically two different pills so I was curious to see how the company would combine them into one.
I have a difficult time taking pills, particularly large pills, so I was curious to see how large Nature Made’s once-a-day Prenatal Multivitamins would be. While they’re not the biggest pills I’ve ever taken, they’re still moderate in size. What makes them easy to swallow is the fact that they’re in a softgel form as I would not have been able to swallow them as a caplet. One of my other concerns was that the vitamins would have a fishy smell or taste, something that might be offensive to pregnant women who have heightened sensitivities due to hormonal changes. Fortunately, they do not!
Women of childbearing age should begin taking prenatal vitamins with Folic Acid before getting pregnant to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Folic Acid is a B vitamin found in leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach, orange juice, and enriched grains. Women of childbearing age should take at least 400 micrograms prior to conception and during early pregnancy to reduce their risk by up to 70%. Nature Made’s Prenatal Multivitamin with DHA contains the following:
- 200mg DHA
- 800mg Folic Acid
- Vitamins A,C,D and Zinc
- Iron
- B – Complex (Vitamins B6, B12)
- EPA/DHA, Niacin
Nature Made Prenatal Multivitamins with DHA are available online and at retailers nationwide.

I learned about selenium. “The level of selenium in food is directly related to the level of selenium in the soil. In the United States, meats and breads are the most common dietary sources. Other good food sources include wheat germ, Brazil nuts, garlic, brown rice and oats.”
