Nearly every single time I get on a plane, I learn something new. If you’ve met me in person, than you likely know that I’m incredibly social and will often strike up conversations on a whim. During one particularly long flight to the middle of the country, I spent a significant amount of time talking to a woman about juicing. I’ve never taken a liking to conventional, bottled juices, mostly because the claims of “real fruit” are often disappointing and I’d rather save those calories for dark chocolate. What I didn’t know was that “juicing” is an entirely different phenomenon than “juice,” and seemed to be a great solution for those days when I simply can’t get in the recommended amounts of leafy green vegetables and antioxidant-rich fruits my body craves.
The handful of times I’ve attempted to juice at home have not produced results I’d like to replicate. At-home juicing is messy and time-consuming, and I often feel guilty about wasting all of that heart-healthy fiber. So, on occasion, I’ll stop by the only store I know that serves fresh-squeezed juices and pay the inflated price for my latest fix…the green juice. I enjoy eating vegetables and I work hard to incorporate a rainbow of colors into our meals, but I could never consume the amount I’d like to if I didn’t juice and some vegetables taste better when they’re combined with more palatable fruits like apples and oranges.
Recently, I stopped by my local Jamba Juice to try their new line of Cold Pressed Juices. One of my kids’ top favorite places to get a smoothie is Jamba Juice so they didn’t require any convincing to join me for a mid-day snack. The line currently includes 4 fruit/vegetable juice blends in portable 12-ounce bottles. The juices are cold-pressed as opposed to heated to preserve naturally-occurring micro-nutrients. They are also free from artificial ingredients, preservatives or added sugar.
I opted for Jamba’s version of the green juice, Garden Burst. This drink features the juice of cucumber, romaine, apples, spinach, lemon, swiss chard and kale and is mildly sweet. This is probably the most ideal juice for me since I would prefer to drink those vegetables as opposed to eating them. The addition of ginger would have made this drink the equivalent of my regular green juice fix. My mom, who also really enjoys juicing, chose Veggie Harvest which includes the juice of apples, carrots, beets, ginger, romaine, lemon, spinach, swiss chard, and kale. This was a sweeter juice and perhaps more ideal for the beginning juicer. In addition to these varieties, I also noticed a Cayenne Lemonade I will definitely be trying in the future!
The juices are priced at $5.49 each, which is comparable to fresh juices available in other markets, however, at present Jamba Juice is offering a buy 5, get one free offer on all cold-pressed juices to get you through the week. This is the ideal way to get in your weekly juicing fix without having to leave your house.
Jamba Juice will continue to offer their selection of freshly squeezed juices if you prefer to customize your drink to include your favorite fruits and vegetables.
