A Sneak Peek at the Season Finale of Chasing Life

Admittedly, I had mixed feelings about ABC Family’s TV drama series about a young woman who learns she has cancer.  Within a short span of time, both my father and a longtime childhood friend died from cancer and I was hesitant to relive all of the emotions that went along with their battle. Surprisingly, of the 3 shows I previewed in Los Angeles last month with ABC Family, Chasing Life was my favorite.

The season finale of Chasing Life airs this Tuesday at 9 pm ET/PT, and in this episode, junior reporter April Carver finally begins chemotherapy treatments during a month-long stay at the hospital. I have vivid memories of the day my father started chemo so I can relate to the wave of emotions she is experiencing as her resolve to fight weakens.

Adapted from the Televisa Spanish-language Mexican TV series, Chasing Life is poignant and more lighthearted than I expected.  Telling this story from the unique perspective of a young woman with cancer is interesting because it challenges our beliefs that cancer only affects a certain population of people.  Cancer transcends age, gender, and race, and each person’s journey is highly personal and unique. From the episode I watched, the show approaches this sensitive topic from an authentic perspective while valuing that each person’s experience is different.

I don’t spend a lot of time watching TV and while I did enjoy Chasing Life, the subject is just too close to home for me to continue watching the show.  I found myself getting very emotional after watching just one episode and I would caution that those who are on this journey or walking through it with a loved one understand this possibility.

The season finale of Chasing Life airs tonight on ABC Family at 9:00 pm ET/PT.
