Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. While I would like to eat pancakes, waffles, and omelets all day, I don’t. Instead I opt for oatmeal or cereal, eggs, and fruit. Oatmeal is high in soluble fiber, which has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol when consumed as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol (American Heart Association). Consuming foods like oatmeal may also reduce the risk of diabetes and certain types of cancer.
When it comes to available brands of oatmeal on the market, are they all comparable? Better Oats contacted me to conduct a taste test between their instant oatmeal and a competitor’s (bold!). I thought the idea sounded interesting so I agreed. I mean…how different could they really be?
Flax? In oatmeal? Yes!
My son LOVES Berry Blast!
Better Oats are made with 100% whole grain oats and include ground Flax seeds which provide a natural source of Omega-3 and fiber. They’re available in 34 varieties (wow!), none of which contain trans fats, cholesterol, or high fructose corn syrup. The fruit varieties contain real pieces of dehydrated fruit (like the picture shows above) and the Lavish Dark Chocolate oatmeal (my favorite) contains real dark chocolate morsels.
So what’s different about Better Oats? I definitely find that the texture thicker (I’m not crazy about runny, watery oatmeal). And the taste is incredible (particularly the Lavish Dark Chocolate…did I say that already?). The other thing I like about Better Oats is that you can pour the water right into the pouch (there is a measuring line) without pulling out a measuring cup. I’ve done that each time and its always come out just right.
Better Oats product line includes Raw Pure & Simple (made with five whole grains including quinoa and barley), Oat Heads (designed for kids), Oat Fit (100 calories, no sugar added), Oat Revolution (thick and hearty), Lavish (it’s like dessert), Mom’s Best Naturals (inspired by the cereal), Abundance (contains six whole grains, 30 grams per serving), Good ‘N Hearty (contains 42 grams of whole grains per serving!), and mmm…Muffins (tastes like a muffin…but better for you).
You can find Better Oats at retailers nationwide. A 5-count box retails for $1.25 to $1.99.
