“It’s like I’ve stepped into a comic book”
2012 is the year of the superhero. Spider Man, Batman, and The Avengers all achieved worldwide success at the box office, confirming the fact that audiences are drawn to superhuman legends who fight to protect the public. After a positive and successful tour in the UK, Europe, and Latin America, Batman Live debuted in Los Angeles at Staples Center Thursday night for a limited weekend run.
Batman Live brings the iconic superhero to life through thrilling stunts, acrobatics, illusions, and pyrotechnics. From the moment the show began, I felt like I had stepped foot into a comic book, immersed in Gotham City.
The original story, created exclusively for the show, details the origin of Robin and the evolution of Batman and Robin as the Dynamic Duo. After Bruce Wayne’s parents are killed in a retrospective account, he becomes Batman, determined to protect the world from the kind of tragedy that befell him. When Dick Grayson’s (Robin) parents (circus acrobats) are murdered during a performance in Gotham City, he is placed under the guardianship of Bruce Wayne and butler Alfred. Grayson’s quest for justice is tempered by Wayne, who teaches him to seek justice rather than revenge.
Audiences meet all of the famed villians including The Joker, Catwoman, The Riddler, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and The Penguin.
While some of the Superhero films have strayed from their DC Comics origins, this show retains it’s comic book authenticity via the LCD video screen sequences, one of my favorite parts of the show.
The interplay of circus acrobatics with high tech sets and sequences lends itself nicely to the evolution of the show and progression of the story.
Batman Live is currently on stage at Staples Center through September 30th.
