A few weeks ago, my daughter finally started walking. I know many of you think I’m bursting with excitement at the achievement of said milestone. Wrong! This is probably one of the most difficult stages in a baby’s development. If you have children, than you know that “she just started walking” means she’s unsteady and clumsy. Right about this time, toddlers begin to get very curious about things. They’re also striving to find that middle ground between dependency and independence. Needless to say, there is never a more important time to ensure our house is safe than now.

A few weeks ago, I sat in on a webinar with child safety expert Debra Holtzman who wrote the book The Safe Baby and a representative from Munckin, a company that develops “clever, innovative products that excite and delight parents.” The topic at hand? Safety and Style. I joined several bloggers as they discussed the latest innovations in baby proofing and nursery decor.
According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, approximately 45 percent of unintentional injury deaths occur in or around the home. Suffice it to say that safety is a top concern among today’s parents. I know firsthand that accidents can happen, even with the most attentive parent. Thanks to the innovation in safety equipment, parents can gain a little peace of mind if they properly child proof their home.
Ensuring that our stairs are gated at all times is my top home safety concern. According to Safe Kids USA, more than half of all nonfatal injuries in children are from falls, many of which involve unprotected stairways. Last year, Munchkin partnered with Lindham, the UK’s number one baby brand to offer a line of safe, stylish safety gates. Safety is always a priority when it comes to selecting products for my children, but it’s an added bonus when those products are actually trendy and attractive. Munchkin’s new safety gates feature innovations such as double and triple-locking mechanisms, U-shaped steel “powerframes” and spring-hinges to reduce impact on household walls. The gates are approved for use in any room of the home and have built-in convenience features such as a self-closing mechanism and an extra wide walk-through. To learn more about Munchkin’s safety gates, or to find a retailer, just visit their website.

Several months ago, we enlisted the assistance of a professional childproofer to walk my husband and I through the obvious and not so obvious safety hazards in our home. This was invaluable and really assisted us in making some important changes. Some of the changes we’ve implemented as a result of that consultation include the following:
Replacing all of the latches on our cabinets with magnetic safety locks since my son quickly learned how to open the latches.
Installing an additional top lock on the exterior door leading to the garage since my son also quickly learned how to unlock a deadbolt.
My best tips for childproofing include the following:
Start early! If you can begin thinking about safety before your baby is born, you’ll be ahead of the game. Infants become mobile quickly.
Get down on their level. Remember that your child is seeing his or her world through a different perspective. If you get down on your hands and knees, you’ll likely be able to identify potential hazards otherwise missed.
And my most important tip would be that childproofing can NEVER take the place of supervision.
Right now, you can upload a funny picture or video of your baby’s first steps or your baby dancing/moving to Munchkin’s Facebook page for a weekly chance to win a safety gate and gift certificate to redo your nursery. One grand prize winner will receive a nursery set from Munchkin (valued at $530.00) and a $250.00 American Express gift card. One second prize winner will receive a $250.00 American Express gift card.
Win It! One of you will win The Extender safety gate from Munchkin. Simply leave me a comment with one of the gates you like on the site and a feature you like.
