I fell in love with musical theater the first time I saw Annie the Musical in Los Angeles with my mother. The stories brought to life on-stage through music move me, and admittedly, I’ve become a bit of a theater geek. Every visit to New York City is an opportunity to check one more show off of my bucket list. Thankfully, living within a few miles of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts means I don’t have to travel far these days to see national touring shows of popular Broadway musicals.
When I first heard Annie the Musical would be debuting at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, I felt a wave of nostalgia. This brand new interpretation of the iconic Tony Award-winning show is being directed by the show’s original lyricist and director Martin Charnin. The story is familiar and follows a young orphan who dreams of finding her family. When Daddy Warbucks brings her into his home, Annie learns what the true meaning of a family is.
The show will feature all of the iconic characters from the original musical and your favorite songs including “It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” and “Tomorrow.” As this is a family show, I encourage you to bring your children since the Segerstrom will have a host of activities both before the show and during intermission.
Annie the Musical Pre-Show Activities
- Arrive one hour before the performance and engage with the show through these activities:
- “What’s your ray of sunshine?”: This is where you’ll have an opportunity to write and then share the one thing that offers you inspiration, hope or motivation. All of the notes collected will be placed on a window decal and shaped into sun rays at the Orchestra Level Lobby.
- Annie’s Secret Society: Upon arrival, you’ll receive a decoder disc with instructions detailing how to discover the special phrase. Everyone who completes this activity will receive a sticker inaugurating them into Annie’s Secret Society.
- iPad Station: Stroll through Harold Gray’s popular comic strip “Little Orphan Annie,” which inspired the production
- Photo Opps: Preserve memories of your family at the show at the Orchestra Terrace Level and the Orchestra Level as Lobby Loops broadcasts the audition process of finding the latest star of Annie the Musical!
