What I love so much about the traditional circus is the intimate setting under the bigtop, showcasing amazing feats that often defy gravity. Cirque du Soleil, known for their theatrical, story-driven performances, recently premiered Amaluna at the LA Waterfront, and the show has quickly become my new favorite.

Amaluna
This celebration of a young woman’s coming of age is a beautiful, artistic show, with a cast that constantly pushes the limits when it comes to acrobatics.

Amaluna is set on a mysterious island of the same name, governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Queen Prospera directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony, in a ritual that esteems femininity, renewal, and balance. Here is where she passes on the insights and values from one generation to another.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men land on the island, initiating an epic, emotional story of love between her daughter and a brave young suitor. As with any coming-of-age story, their love is put to the test and the couple must face demanding trials while overcoming setbacks in order to achieve mutual trust, faith, and harmony.
Ama is often referred to as “mother” in many languages while luna means moon. Amaluna is thus a symbol of femininity that elicits the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of a goddess and protector of the planet.
