Do small changes really make a difference? I constantly ask myself this question when I’m shopping at the grocery store, separating my recyclables, setting our thermostat, turning off lights, and doing my laundry. I don’t know that I’ll personally see a reduction in pollution or a diminished burden on our landfills by recycling. But I do know that I can track savings simply by looking at my water and energy bills.
Laundry is something I do so frequently, I don’t think much about it. Combine that with our new set of powerful, innovative machines and you might as well remove me from the laundry picture.
It used to be that I’d wash colors in warm or cold water and whites in hot water. And then I did some reading and realized how wasteful it is to wash in hot water and how effective cold water washing really is. In fact, washing in hot water can actually set stains.
But can you really get clothes clean by turning the temperature down? Absolutely! Not only will you save energy, but you’ll save money! Here are a few tips on making sure your clothes are squeaky clean, even when washing in cold water.
1. Tackle stains immediately. This will prevent them from setting and will allow easier and more complete removal.
2. Sort by color AND weight. This will prevent heavier fabrics from damaging more delicate fabrics during the washing process.
3. Select a detergent specifically formulated for cold water washing.
Do you wash in cold water? If so, have you saved money? What challenges have you faced?
