I’ve always dreamed of working at a place where work is defined by imagination and ingenuity. Perhaps that’s why Disney resonates so deeply within me. I have a creative, artistic side that pales in comparison to the brilliant minds that bring films like Tomorrowland to life, create immersive experiences for guests at Disney Parks, and inspire active, imaginative play through technologies like Playmation.
Recently, I had an opportunity to speak with two Disney Dreamers who are working to engage families in the stories they know and love. Charita Carter is the Senior Creative Producer and Development Manager of the Scenic Illusion team at Walt Disney Imagineering. Her role includes developing new tools and techniques to supply designers with new and expanded capabilities for storytelling. As Senior Creative Producer, Carter has lead several special projects at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort including the Maker Faire Exhibit and Parks & Resort’s D23 Exhibit.
With Tomorrowland debuting on Blu-ray, Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on October 13th, 2015, Carter shared her thoughts on the film and how it relates to her work at Walt Disney Imagineering. Tomorrowland is a mystery adventure film that follows the story of a jaded scientist and an optimistic teen who embark on a dangerous mission to uncover the secrets of a mysterious place that exists somewhere in time and space. Carter loved the fact that it [Tomorrowland] was about optimism. “One thing that really resonated with me was the question of, ‘we know things might not be like the way we want them but can’t we fix it?'” Carter believes that people become the best people they can be and as they understand their gifts and talents, collectively, that will improve the future…a future we would want to be in. “If we put our minds to it, we can make an impact.”
As the Vice President of Production and Content for Disney Consumer Products, Mike Goslin has devoted the last 2 1/2-3 years to the development of Playmation. When asked about his thoughts on Tomorrowland, he echoed Carter’s appreciation for the optimism presented through the film. “You have to be an optimist to keep going or to believe in the first place that such a thing can be done.” In Goslin’s work with Playmation, he understands the need for collaboration, a theme that was also heavily present throughout the film. “…it takes a lot of effort and a lot of collaborative effort to pull something like this [Playmation] off. And I think the movie really taps into that.”
